What travelers are saying
- St_DiaS27 contributionsGöreme was an epicenter of early Christianity, it also featuring painted cave churches. The rupestrian churches date from the 10-11th. century and include Tokalı Kilise and El Nazar Kilise , St. Barbara , Saklı Kilise , Karanlık Kilise . .. . The otherworldly fairy chimneys are impressive. The park is a unique spot, not to be missed. Prepare for at least 2 hours of walk with a lot of matchless sights (it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985). I found also the "Dark Church" remarkable because of the way in which it preserved the beauty of the celebrated frescoes. Nevertheless, if you are not curios/passionate about the subject, it is better not to pay the additional ticket.
Prom a practical perspective, the landmark is easily to be found and has a parking There were several very commercial stores while I expected to find something authentic craft objects. A little crowded in the morning with longer waiting lines for the ticket purchase. If you feel the need for a guide, you can find an authorized one inside. We did not go with this opting (as we have done some reading prior to the visit) but there were several groups which seemed pleased with the service. There is a cafe and a museum shop inside so you can have a coffee and a drink.Written April 29, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Seeing the museum itself requires to climb over several stairs and steep slope, taking a guide is better than using audio guide(costs 350 Turkish liras). Overall you need at least 45 minutes within the museum to see it completely. It's a fun place to explore and also has great valley view for pictures.Written September 10, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Marlon ACebu City, Philippines32 contributionsOne of the magical places to be. It feels like in a magical place frozen in time. - cutelady BaluchMuscat Governorate, Oman3,483 contributions(Pigeon Valley) earned its name from the countless man made dovecotes (Pigeon Houses) that have been carved into the soft volcanic tuff. Since ancient times Pigeons have been used in the Cappadocia region for food and fertiliser for the infertile soil. While pigeons no longer play such an important role in the area, their rocky homes have still been maintained by locals and can be found atop rock pillars and inside excavated cave houses and churches throughout the region, however, they are particularly numerous in this valley. A great way to see Pigeon Valley is from above via a hot air balloon tour. Tours leave every morning just before sunrise so you will already be floating above the stunning landscape as the sun comes up.Written June 27, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We were staying at the Ascencion Hotel so getting here was a short 50 meter walk. The view of the city with the lights was magical and lots of picture taking tourists were there. Clearly the place is very popular as every night we saw people walking or cars driving to the top. There is a car park at the top and a cafe but if you just want to walk on up if you want. While there is a cafe open at the top, there were no expectations to buy anything. If you drive here note that the last 50 meters are VERY steep.Written July 29, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - happykoabugHonolulu, HI600 contributionsIn my opinion the Dark Church was the best place to visit in the Goreme Open Air Museum. Pay the extra fee to see the gorgeous frescos. The colors were amazing. No photos but you can purchase postcards from the museum shop.Written May 31, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - DARREN SGold Coast, Australia14 contributionsWe walked from our hotel Sultan Cave Suites up to the Open Air Museum traversing all the caves and pigeon houses along the way. Then we went back down along the Sword Valley, this part is an amazing walk through skinny yet deep gorges. Absolutely recommend this it is amazing.Written May 4, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- charlie_lindsellLondon, UK20 contributionsLovely but strenuous walk. Three quarters of the way up we mistakenly took a right turn which lead to the farmed areas not the trail so we had to turn back and retrace our steps for about 15 minutes.
After 3 hours reached the top and managed to hitch hike to the next junction. From there we hailed a passing taxi to get back to Goreme.Written April 11, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The landscape is just wordless and the best is when you can catch the sunset thereWritten May 5, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Mostly you can go to visit that valley with safari jeeps, can not reach with a normal car. We get there with Tempest Jeep Safari / Uluer group and other secret places also.Written January 24, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - happykoabugHonolulu, HI600 contributionsOne of the stops in Cappadocia that our tour group did. This rock formation really did look like a camel. There are other different rock formations nearby. Not too much parking in the area.Written May 31, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

A little bit out of town, it's wonderfully quiet and surrounded by the spectacular mountains. It also has a nice swimming pool and is very close to the open air museum. I would recommend this place for every keen camper!Written June 18, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
