- jbushman2017Nipomo, CA519 contributionsWas here with my family on a warm July Night. We were staying at the Ascencion Hotel so getting here was a short 50 meter walk. The view of the city with the lights was magical and lots of picture taking tourists were there. Clearly the place is very popular as every night we saw people walking or cars driving to the top. There is a car park at the top and a cafe but if you just want to walk on up if you want. While there is a cafe open at the top, there were no expectations to buy anything. A few tips, firstly don't pay, you don't have to, it's a public road and not a private attraction. Just walk past the booth, the guy chased after us saying to pay and blocked my way for a few seconds, just keep walking and say no, he'll soon scamper back to his booth in fear of missing others to rip off. No one will ask to see your "ticket" at any point so don't worry.
From the other side of town it's a bit of a down then up walk, so leave early to make sure you aren't rushed as it gets quite steep.
The balloons will set off about 30-45 mins before sunrise so if you want to see them all taking off get there earlier.
Some only stay up for a short period so for the best shots get there just after sunrise as some land about 30 minutes after.
