What travelers are saying
- Celine WestonSeattle, WA5 contributionsThe earliest "monasteries," some of which existed before Constantinople and the spread of Christianity. The idea that early Christians lived here was very astounding. You may access buildings that are in very good condition, such as a dining room and a few little chapels. One of Cappadocia's must-sees, without a doubt. Sneakers will probably work just fine, but if you want to enter some of these buildings, make sure you wear comfortable shoes.Written January 10, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - St_DiaS40 contributionsGöreme was an epicenter of early Christianity, it also featuring painted cave churches. The rupestrian churches date from the 10-11th. century and include Tokalı Kilise and El Nazar Kilise , St. Barbara , Saklı Kilise , Karanlık Kilise . .. . The otherworldly fairy chimneys are impressive. The park is a unique spot, not to be missed. Prepare for at least 2 hours of walk with a lot of matchless sights (it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985). I found also the "Dark Church" remarkable because of the way in which it preserved the beauty of the celebrated frescoes. Nevertheless, if you are not curios/passionate about the subject, it is better not to pay the additional ticket.
Prom a practical perspective, the landmark is easily to be found and has a parking There were several very commercial stores while I expected to find something authentic craft objects. A little crowded in the morning with longer waiting lines for the ticket purchase. If you feel the need for a guide, you can find an authorized one inside. We did not go with this opting (as we have done some reading prior to the visit) but there were several groups which seemed pleased with the service. There is a cafe and a museum shop inside so you can have a coffee and a drink.Written April 29, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Given you have travelled all the way, no reason not to take in the fairy chimneys.
We drove so had the flexibility to take these in along our way from the airport.Written October 12, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Alexander MokretsovChalong, Thailand2,325 contributionsBeautiful landscape with ancient cave town’s remains scattered throughout. - ValeriaAntalya, Türkiye60 contributionsI ve visited this amazing valley twice , both times in December. This valley had been a hideout place for the first Christian monks. The valley is divided into two banks by the river . You have the possibility to cross the river banks by the natural wooden bridges. Along the walk you will be able to explore the cave dwellings, make sure to get the head torch with you as well as the 360 camera. I explored such caves which are connected with the tunnels ! Not for cowards though ;)!
There are hidden churches which are easy to enter , there also signs to follow. The atmosphere is very peaceful and quite , you may come across cute forest cats which will follow you on your journey. The birds twitching is also very beautiful in Ihlara Valley! I loved this place !Written January 5, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The thought that this sprawling subterranean network once housed an entire civilization is nothing short of mind-blowing. The city’s complex system of tunnels, doors, and ingeniously designed traps speaks volumes about the ingenuity and resourcefulness of its former inhabitants.
Exploring Kaymaklı is like walking through a live history book. Each narrow passage and carved-out room offers a glimpse into the past, showing how people lived, stored food, and protected themselves from invaders. The experience is immersive and awe-inspiring, making it a must-visit for history buffs and adventure seekers alike.
However, a word of caution: this is not a place for everyone. If you are claustrophobic or have mobility issues, particularly bad knees, the cramped and often steep passages might prove challenging. The site demands a fair amount of bending and climbing, so it’s essential to be physically prepared.
In terms of cost, like many attractions in Turkey, the admission fee for foreigners is higher than for locals. However, at 100 Turkish Lira (approximately $5-6 USD), the price feels reasonable for such a unique and historically significant site. Despite the higher cost for international visitors, the value of experiencing Kaymaklı Underground City firsthand is immense.
For those who are up for the physical challenge, Kaymaklı offers an unforgettable adventure into the depths of ancient human ingenuity and survival. It’s a vivid reminder of what humans are capable of creating, and a unique historical treasure not to be missed during your visit to Turkey.Written February 2, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We walked here from our hotel as we enjoy walking and taking it all in. They offer horse back riding tours once you arrive, there’s a small shop where you can purchase water but if you decide to walk there as we did make sure to take some water with you it took us about 1hour to make it.Written December 31, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Baggio1018London, UK383 contributionsThere are plenty of these caves/dwellings in the area, sometimes as a group, other times, you see the odd one or two.
As a result, don't get too fixated about seeing any specific ones (especially not worth going on a tour/paying high entry fees).

If I did return, I would hike it, but I would say it's not entirely necessary to do that. There are plenty of amazing sights in Cappadocia; this one felt very similar to Imagination Valley, which I thought was more interesting.Written December 23, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
