NOTE: Access road is about 300m north of the point given on the tripadvisor map along Zhangxing Rd. The perfect outing if you want to stretch your legs between flights. Less than half hour by taxi from airport, even closer if you are staying in taoyuan. Main track is about 1km paved, with viewing platform on summit at 155m above sea level. All through forest and above the smog. Birds, butterflies, plants and views.Return same way, or find road through golf course on the other side. Lots of little side tracks, a temple and other interesting things along the way. Descriptions only in Chinese. 5 min from Tai Mall where we spent the other half of our layover.

Jiabanshan military tunnel (aka refuge trail) next to Jiabanshan Residence was built in 1963 as a contingency plan to ensure the Chiang’s (then forever President in Taiwan until his death) safety. In case of emergency, Chiang can safely leave here to one of harbors to escape by boat or via one of forbidden highway.
It also serves as a command post if war broke out. Entering the 20-meter long underground tunnel gives you a chill. In front of the signs that say “Never Forget National Humiliation” and “Be Loyal to the ”, you now act as commander! Dodge bullets, look out for ambushing underwater soldiers (aka frog man), climb rope from an emergency helicopter, you name it!
Today, the intensity and sternness of the place has worn out. Instead of real enemies, a troop of animal figures comprised of clouded leopard, pangolin, Taiwan black bear and many other Taiwanese endemics surrounds the base, representing Air Force, Navy, or army soldiers with military fighting gestures (holding rifles). It adds a lot of fun element to this historical site.
Welcome to the imaginary military world!

The Nankan River Ecological Park is a great place for a stroll, especially around Lunar New Year, when you can takes in the colorful illumkinations. You can also watch the fireworks. It's quite a long walk;iIn summer, it's cool in the evening, and you can get out of your stuffy house for a while.

The Zhaiming Trail leads down from the Zhaiming Monastery, and along the river. It is a beautiful walk, it's a bit steep in places. You get a great view from the trail out over the river to Daxi township.. The folliage is abuindant, it's a very pleasant walk. The trail starts at the Zhaiming Monastery, The Zhaiming Monastery is over 150 years old, it was established in the Ching Dynasty (1644-1911). The monks and nuns aim to establish a "pure land" on earth through prayer and good works. Visitors are welcome.
