Hello,
We are a group of ladies ranging in age from 28-40. No kids with us. Part of group wants to go to Gili Air and part wants to stay fully on Bali. Staying in Ubud for 3 nights and I've booked 2 rooms for 4 nights at Aston Canggu Beach Resort. We really want a short walk to a clean beach, air con, clean room and easy access to food and afforadable drinks. Budget is around $150/night per room. Are we better off staying in Canggu or should I switch to Nusa Dua - the beaches are supposed to be nicer, right?
-Confused

Answer: Hi Megs,
perhaps you can outline your exact overall itinerary from start to finish especially as part wants to go to the Gilis. Is this planned in. How did your group intend to split.
Suggest you say exactly what hotel you've booked in Ubud.
NUSA DUA
Nusa Dua has the best maintained beaches but means nothing. Beaches are average at best.
As above Nusa Dua is basically a manufactured resort area, mostly 5* AI style hotels, often gated, often little to nothing outside of the hotels except another Hotel.
Most expensive part of Bali where a glass of ordinary wine will easily cost $9+ tax
If you want something outside of the hotels then look at the Ayodya (or this area close by). Jalan Mengiat (road heading inland) has a few local eateries/shops. Ayodya IMO has best beach area.
other area for stuff outside is up around the Grand Mirage (not in the Grand Mirage if you'd rather be kids free).
CANGGU
Canggu is "surfer dude" central with a bit of yoga and the odd "out looking to find oneself".
Aston is actually in a good location at "Old Mans" with most local stuff in the area but the hotel itself has gone down a bit in recent years.
SANUR
My suggestion is Sanur. Perhaps Griya Santrian.
http://www.santrian.com/griya/
Laid back resort town. Beachwalk prom with lots of non-pretentious places to eat/drink. Main road Jalan Danau Tamblingan also has shops and places to eat/drink.
Beach is calm as it is protected by the outer reef.
GOING TO GILIS
Easily done. Fastboat companies include free pickup (and dropoff on return) from Ubu dan dall major 'southern resorts". Often direct Hotel but this can vary especially around Ubud.
If you want more details (bookings/pickups/times) please give your exact overall itinerary/days.
