What travelers are saying
- Gina G16 contributionsDuring our vacation in Ruidoso, we decided to take a day trip to White Sands National Park, and the experience was truly beyond words. From the moment you enter the park, it feels as if you’ve been transported to another world—an otherworldly landscape unlike anything I’ve encountered before. The vast expanse of glistening gypsum sand, stretching across the horizon, creates the illusion of snow-covered hills under the summer sun, offering one of the most unique and surreal sights imaginable.
The acoustics of the dunes were astonishing—sounds seem to carry across the sands in a way that’s both mesmerizing and eerie. We also noticed that technology behaves a bit differently in the park. While trying to take family photos using a remote shutter for our camera, we discovered it wouldn’t work properly, and even our car key fob was acting up. It turns out that the remote signals struggle to function in this environment, perhaps due to the unique mineral composition of the dunes or interference with the atmosphere.
The park is steeped in fascinating history, from its formation as part of an ancient sea to its cultural significance to Native American peoples. The visitor center, though quaint, offers an insightful introduction to the area’s geological and historical background. The on-site store is charming, and we couldn’t resist picking up a few souvenirs. They also offer sleds for sale—a must for anyone visiting with kids or those young at heart. We bought one and spent hours sledding down the dunes. It’s an exhilarating yet slightly terrifying experience depending on the size of the dune you choose. Fortunately, there’s a variety of dunes, with gentler slopes perfect for children and steeper, more daring hills for those feeling adventurous.
In addition to sledding, visitors can enjoy hiking, picnicking, and ranger-led programs that explore the park’s unique ecosystem and wildlife. The park is also renowned for its stargazing opportunities, as the remote location and clear desert skies offer some of the best night sky views in the country. For those interested in exploring the surrounding area, the nearby town of Alamogordo offers attractions like the New Mexico Museum of Space History and White Sands Missile Range, which delves into the region’s role in space exploration and military history.
White Sands is, without a doubt, a bucket-list destination. The blend of natural beauty, history, and adventure makes it an unforgettable experience, and I am so glad we made the trip. Whether you’re seeking thrills on the dunes, a quiet hike through the surreal landscape, or simply looking to marvel at one of nature’s true wonders, White Sands National Park is a must-visit.Written October 10, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. There is also a good history of space exploration. It is very child friendly as well as fun for adults. The place was extremely clean, including the restrooms.Written August 30, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - beetrvlnFountain Valley, California2,210 contributionsHeart of the Desert was our favorite pistachio spot in Alamogordo. The gift shop is nice, where you can buy everything pistachio, along with an olive oil tasting and a wine tasting. Yes you can even get pistachio wine.
We stepped back into the wine room and met Lisa for our wine tasting. She was knowledgeable about the wines and honestly their wines were fabulous. Very drinkable, and we enjoyed each and everyone. We even ended up buying a bottle we would drink at our hotels along the road. Lisa was fun to visit with and we did try a few of the olive oils and meandered around the gift shop. A good place to buy those gifts for those back home.
A fun spot to stop and enjoy for an hour or so. They do offer a tour of the pistachio farm, but we didn't have enough time, so passed on it this trip.
Definitely check them out if you find yourself in the area.Written October 1, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Waiting in the middle of the New Mexico desert with hundreds of others, watching the sun rise whilst waiting to enter was magical. If you’re not a US/Canadian citizen, expect a few questions at the gate upon entry - but the security staff were efficient and friendly.Written March 8, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jeannette GSaint Paul, MN7 contributionsAs others have said, the views are phenomenal. The park host was very friendly and welcoming.
The water pressure fluctuates from pretty weak to adequate. Interesting if you are showering.
Would definitely recommend for an overnight or couple of nights as the location is convenient for White Sands.Written May 13, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. My husband was not very enthused to go when I suggested it, but grudgingly agreed to accompany me (“happy wife happy life”). I think he actually enjoyed the museum more than I did! The museum is so nice, modern and professionally organized. There is so much information and very interesting exhibits about the history (even ancient history) of space interest/exploration, the U.S. space program, the space equipment, the astronauts, etc. I cannot imagine that anyone would not enjoy at least parts of this museum. And I was amazed that the entrance fee was not more than it was. Incredible value in my opinion.Written October 6, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Daydream197617303952 contributionsThis was a fascinating exhibit especially because of the information provided by Deacon Peter Schumacher who not only provided a detailed description of the Shroud and it's history but explained in a manner that was comprehensible to a lay person with limited scientific knowledge.
Also, the person who reviewed and called this a fraud is remarkably ill informed. There is nothing fraudulent in the information provided. And the Shroud itself has not been shown to be fraudulent in what it represents which is a burial cloth of a person who was scourged, pierced with a spear, crowned with thorns and crucified, roughly 2000 years ago.Written March 30, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Nancy HAlamogordo, NM820 contributionsYou could spend hours at the Toy Train Depot and Museum! You can self-guide or a volunteer is happy to tell you about the train memorabilia. The purchase of tickets is for a ride on the train, or the museum or both. What a fabulous way to learn about how trains. - SkwikiBurnaby, Canada1,786 contributionsGreat marketing to have the Alamogordo sign and the giant pistachio at different locations ;-)
This was a great little gift shop at reasonable prices. The woman working there on our visit was awesome. A storm warning came across the radio as we were purchasing some gifts. She suggested our route options. She also gave us information on the Ruidoso wildfire.
We bought most of our family gifts here, then went to the main store to see the big pistachio.Written July 13, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
