What travelers are saying
- Ginger AlaskaSpokane, WA36 contributionsSuch a magical place with parrots chirping in the trees and moss covered ruins. This temple is famous for being in the movie Tomb Raider and stands true to the mystique and drama of Hollywood. Beautiful temple and feels intimate compared to Angkor Wat.Written November 10, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. one of the oldest and most well-preserved temple sites in Cambodia. It was a 30 minute long bumpy ride from Siem reap as we passed many other temples that are not open to the public.
This complex was started around AD 967 within the rugged jungle and about 20 miles from Angkor. Its name Banteay Srei means “Citadel of Women” and is recognized as a tribute to the beauty of women, who are featured in painstakingly carved sandstone bas-relief murals. We were told the temple is a favorite of archeologists and tourists for its delicate designs, as it is in a wonderful state of preservation, but we were told is relatively small size as compared to other Angkor temples. The entrance and internal layout is very similar to Anchor Wat, but just in a smaller scale.
The complex in 1920 was discovered by Europeans archologist totally falling apart as large “strangler” tree roots had disturbed most of the blocks, with some of the stone images missing as looters had sold them to brokers who marked them to rich collectors in Europe and the US. The archaeologist had to put everything back together like a gigantic jig saw puzzle (German formula called Anastitas). One problem was they used modern concrete as a mortar, and such does NOT
work well over time with the iron-based sandstone blocks.Written October 21, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. This is a series of temples, rather than one, with many many towers adorning it. Although they're now weathered, it still an impressive sight. The main temple complex is smaller than Angkor Wat, but was less busy when we were there and we were able to wander around more, through the complex underneath the towers. If you're fair-skinned like me, you'll welcome the shade whilst you look at the carvings from the 12th Century. Definitely worth a visit.Written September 1, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It's a really nice, well-organized (and air-conditioned) visitor center! An English-speaking guide gave a brief talk about the history of civil-war-era landmines and US-dropped unexploded ordnance in Cambodia, with visuals of each type of weapon the rats are able to find. Following that, trainers gave a demo and we were all allowed to hold and take photos with Jordan The Mine-Sniffing Rat. Large signs and a display inside give more detailed information on the work that APOPO's scent detection animals are doing around the world. Honestly really interesting, and it felt like our money was going to a good organization.Written November 10, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Stig050531 contributionsSuch a variety of products which are also cheap and going to help people much in need. - Andreas S7 contributionsThis is not a zoo, the animals were treated respectfully and looked at from a distance. That being said, since many of the animals were rescues from households they were used to people and came forward to see what was happening. This is a great place to see some of the endangered exotic animals of Cambodia - while supporting their release into the wild.Written August 9, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Abby M16 contributionsDefinitely worth a visit!! If you’re looking for a trip around Siem Reap with fewer tourists, head to the butterfly centre. It’s great if you’re passionate about nature (or just want to see some beautiful native butterflies), and entry is cheap - plus you are contributing to important Cambodian wildlife conservation. It’s located close to the land mine museum and a stunning temple (we did the Angkor botanical gardens on the way back too) so you can make a full day trip out of it. Overall, a beautiful local butterfly garden in rural Cambodian countryside.Written October 4, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Stay690918Phnom Penh, Cambodia10 contributionsWent by tuk tuk from Siem Reap so was casual and not commercial. Flooded forest is something special to experience. Reminds me of Inle Lake in Myanmar. - Jaimi B1 contributionWe chose to contact Mr Wang for our visit to Angkor Wat temple as we saw he had great reviews and it was the best decision. Mr Wang was a great driver, very polite and driving safely and always had water and cold towels which were very much needed after each temple visit. We also had Tom as our guide for all the temple visits who was super knowledgeable, friendly and kind and was a fantastic guide to take us around.

This was a wonderful way to spend half a day. From my investigations, Kampong Khleang is still very authentic compared to the other villages that were closer to Siem Reap (which apparently had become very touristy, and villagers were not benefiting from the tourist trade, instead, large corporates/companies have taken over).Written November 6, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Joe FNavan, Ireland40 contributionsBig thanks to Daniel for organising a great tour for us around the temples. He organised a great tour guide (Savun) for us (included in the price) and drove us around all the different temples that we wanted to visit for a very reasonable price! Icing on the cake was the free beer he gave us at the end😊 Big shout out to Savun our tour guide which Daniel organised for us. Savun was excellent in his knowledge of the temples and made sure we didn’t miss any important parts! Savun really made sure that we learned about the history of Cambodia but also the new opportunities and struggles the Cambodian people are faced with. In summary, we definitely recommend getting in touch with Daniel👍Written September 13, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Best of all it is free and a very enjoyable place to walk. I really enjoyed the area with the animals and the koi pond.Written October 7, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. temple which is located about 1.5 miles from
Anchor Wat.
The temple was built without mortar and, after it was abandoned, trees took root in the loosened stones.
Thy say this is a popular location to visit, as it represents what the entire temple complexes at Anchor may have looked like when the French archaeologist first started to explore the area in 1930’s (trees (strangler trees) growing out of the ruins and TOTALLY disturbing the stones with their roots). You may have seen Tomb Rader that used this location in its filming.Written October 21, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The temple is an artificial island with a small Hindu temple on it. At the base of the island are two snakes that surround the island. We liked that the scenery was unique from the other templesWritten February 11, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
