What travelers are saying
- T-SGlobetrottersPreston, UK4,097 contributionsThe area was once a wealthy merchants area with many grand houses. A number have been transformed into museums or art galleries. Several of these are excellent and it is worth walking up these hilly streets for these alone although anyone with mobility issues my find getting around quite difficult as the cobbled roads are quite rough.
For lovers of architecture, there are many well preserved Bulgarian Renaissance houses as you walk around the streets. Development is strictly controlled so the area is little changed over the years.Written September 20, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Built in the 2nd century AD situated in a hollow to give good acoustics. The marble seats are in remarkable condition and still used today for concerts. The theatre at the time could seat upto 6,000 people. There is also good views of Plovdiv. Entrance fee is 5 Lev (2.50 Euro)Written May 29, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- T-SGlobetrottersPreston, UK4,097 contributionsThe museum is housed in a grand building in Plovdiv old town. There are good displays of agricultural machinery, costumes and jewellery worn by local ethnic communities. Most displays have some English explanations and rooms also have expanded explanations accessed by QR code. One room features musical instruments that might usefully have contained some audio content. Upstairs there is one room decorated in Viennese and French Baroque style reflecting the former owners tastes. A visit takes around 45 minutes.

On the southern side Rhodope mountains, on the northen one central valley and Balkan mountains in the far (40-50 km).Written July 14, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - T-SGlobetrottersPreston, UK4,097 contributionsThis small area is warren of narrow streets and shops. Originally a craftsmanship area, it was saved from intended demolition in the 1970’s under the communist regime by cultural activists but remained sadly neglected for many years. Five years before securing the European ‘Capital of Culture’ award in 2019, efforts were made to transform the area into a thriving cultural area. It is predominantly pedestrianised. In more recent years many restaurants and cafes have sprung up in response to a tourist influx. The whole area is buzzing with life and is a must do place to see if visiting the area.Written September 20, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Rodman100Wellington, New Zealand754 contributionsSituated in the middle of a pedestrian part of town, there has been a small part of the stadium which has been excavated. You can view from the street level looking down or you can walk down a set of stairs to view at eye level. There is a 3D movie you can watch for a small fee of 5 Lev (approx 2.5 Euro)Written May 29, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Wander693552Pristina, Kosovo6 contributionsA real jewel, wonderful antique mosaics, very well preserved and displayed.
Accessible on foot from the center (10-15 min) or by car; there's a free parking lot (6-8 cars) for the visitors. Otherwise there's a paid parking zone on the boulevard in front.Written August 9, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - T-SGlobetrottersPreston, UK4,097 contributionsLocated in Plovdiv old town. This grand house was built in 1834-5 by a wealthy Armenian family and it is one of the best preserved houses in its original form in Plovdiv. Decoration is rich with no expense spared. All rooms are furnished. There is a rare preserved historic hammam bath, a fountain originally used to pour rose water in one room and painted landscapes on walls reflecting the merchants travels around Europe. This was a very enjoyable visit.
