We were just in awe of the city walls and how intact they are. You can buy your tickets on line or in the city center. Buying on line saves having to stand in another line. Go early or late to avoid the crowds. We were there in September and were lucky that it was not that hot or crowded. We also toured the walls as part of a walking tour which definitely added to the history and experience.
You do have to pay to get on the walls and it is a one time ticket. There are three different places to enter the walls: 1. near the Pile Gate (this is the most popular entrance) 2. by the Place Gate near St. Luke's Fort. 3. At St John's Fortress. If you exit the walls before completing the entire thing, you cannot re enter on the same ticket. You are only able to go counterclockwise around the walls, so everyone is moving in the same direction. If you have purchase a Dubrovnik Pass, the city walls is included on the pass.
If you have a few days here, might be wise to check the cruise ship schedule and not go when cruise ships are in port or go late in the day. But don't miss the walls even if it is crowded.

We visited the Fortress as part of our Game of Thrones tour. There are stairs to climb to access the fort (like most things in Dubrovnik). I think touring the fortress would have been pretty boring without a tour guide, at least he provided some history and mostly where scenes for Game of Thrones were filmed. The views of the city walls and old town are just stunning from the fort, so that is worth the visit. The view at the harbor between the old town and the fortress is beautiful as well and a well know port scene in GOT. The Fortress is included in the Dubrovnik pass if you are using it.

During the 1 hour F&E time we ventured into the premise which definitely looks imposing. Facing the main street is the western facade of the palace which also includes the main entrance. Beautiful arcades and arches supported by lovely carved pillars and capitals embellish the front facade. We walked past benches of elderly locals sitting there simply rest, chatting. Dubrovnik’s 15-century Gothic-Renaissance–style Rector's Palace (Knezev Dvor) is the most impressive bldg of great historic & artistic value and is home to the Rector’s office and chambers. There are also other Halls, courtrooms and even a former dungeon. Yes a jail then we peeped into!
The splendid bldg has survived explosions & earthquakes over the years. The atrium is a spacious, with columns, galleries & beautiful Baroque staircase. However the staircase were all blocked so we have no access upstairs.
The building was once upon a time the supreme political institution, its now house the Cultural-historic Department of the Dubrovnik Museum. We viewed the small exhibition halls' display and that's a souvenir shop too.
    Do not miss this!

Beautiful monastery and church. Plan to spend about 1 hour here. The entrance fee is included with the Dubrovnik Pass. Worth a visit.

It's a small but very interesting museum showing some of the history of Dubrovnik through the photographs displayed. It was also cool inside, which was a bonus on a very hot day. I would recommend going up to the roof terrace to get an even higher view of the city with fewer people around.

This is a beautiful building with a lovely peaceful courtyard, where you can escape the hustle and bustle of the old town for a break. We visited with the Dubrovnik pass and it only cost €4. The architecture is fantastic and there are a couple of small exhibits with items on show to view as well.

This fortress is an extension of the city walls. You must climb and walk the city walls while you are in the old city as you will enjoy great views of the old city and the harbor. While there, you might want to continue on top of the Fortress.

We enjoyed a brief visit to this historic house of worship. It is located on a couple of upper floors and you reach it up a narrow steep staircase. You will find some valuable religious objects and some stories of history.

At the end of Stradun (before turning to the Habour) is the most notable building, the famous Sponza Palace. Sponza Palace was built from 1516 to 1522 & during the time of the Republic it was the custom office, the state mint and state treasury (think Bank). Sponza now houses the most important cultural institution - the Dubrovnik State Archives, within which are keep many precious authentic documents on the thousand-year history of the Dubrovnik Republic. It is also home to the Memorial Room of the Defenders of Dubrovnik in the Homeland War in 1991.
Our Local guide explains that Sponza palace derived its name from the word for the spot where rainwater was collected (Spongia-”alluvium”) according to the former use of the spot it was built on. It is also one of the few buildings in the old town to survive the 1667 earthquake mainly intact!
On the front facade there is a sculpture of San Biagio, patron saint of Dubrovnik. Our group went in & were briefed further on its history & architectural.
Just in front of the Sponza Palace is the famous Church of Saint Blaise (the patron Saint of Dubrovnik) which we did not manage to go it ti appreciate further...

The Bokar Fortress was considered as the key point of defence of the western sea as well as a land approach to the town.

The fort was designed by the Florentine architect Michelozzo di Bartolomeo Michelozzi as a semicircular two-story building. Today, it is considered to be one of the oldest casemented forts in Europe as well as a beautiful piece of medieval fortification architecture.

The best view is across the Pile Bay from the St. Lawrence Fortress.
In its interior, there are several cannons on display as well as a small precious stones (lapidary) collection. The access to the tower is via the Town Walls – not well signed.

Located on top of Mount Srd. You may walk around the outside of the fortress. To access the interior you must pay 5 euros. Inside you will find many displays and a video presentation related to the 1991 war. Worth a visit.

Located just outside the town walls as part of the PloÄŤe Gate entrance to the Old town, this fortress took almost a century to complete. Construction began in 1462 and as the threat from the Ottoman Empire increase, work was ramped up and the fortress was quickly completed in 1539.

The intent was to protect the Eastern entrance to the city as well as the harbor. It was one of the last fortifications to be built in the fortress wall. In the past, this fort housed a city garrison and a cannon-making workshop. It features three entrances and a large terrace that offers spectacular views of the old harbour and Lokrum.

There is a road that extends beyond the bridge; it runs next to the old infirmaries or Lazareti, which were a series of long rooms where travelers were forced to stay during quarantine periods heightened by fears of epidemics.

Up at the top there is a huge stone-paved terrace that is used as a stage for events during the Dubrovnik Summer Festival.

You need to wear at least sports sandals rather than flip flops, but this is a worthwhile climb. Good views.

Fortress/walk has no entry charge. The light is better in the morning than the afternoon due to the position of the sun.

It is worth also making the short detour to the Church of St John the Baptist whilst you are coming up this way.

In fact you can actually visit the Fortress as a means of getting between Lopud settlement and Sunj beach (though its a longer route than the one the golf buggies use, but more scenic).

Right next to the entrance, as well as being surrounded by a church and a nice fountain where locals drink the water. Building is neat, but nothing amazing.
