Pero gave us an insider's tour of wonders, lit by the knowledge of a real scholar (his research is distinguished). We learned so much, but the experience remained light and entertaining because it came in the form of stories, from history, but bearing the marks of his own experiences as a lifelong resident. A main theme of his is the intelligence (and cunning) of Ragusans through history, which preserved their small republic in the face of the mighty empires that surrounded it, and which subsequently kept its spirit alive even under the repeated subjugations and wars that followed, so that the city yet stands, preserved and unbowed, flying still its flag of Liberty. Not the least of these gifts of knowledge was the whereabouts of the best fish soup I have ever tasted! So this is our inadequate thank you to Pero. You will not find a better guide to the city and its history (and its fish soup).
