This was a spectacular addition to my Peru trip! This experience is so special and unforgettable. The adventure began in the Callao area, so driving through the neighborhood gave a nice glimpse of life there. We then met with the rest of the group and were given our tickets.
On the boat, we floated by many gorgeous and diverse islands. During this time, Ismael, our guide, shared information about the animal species and the history of the islands. I was amazed by the ecological diversity. While on the boat, you could turn your head and see a dusty, sand covered island, but then turn your head the other way and see a rocky, jagged one. We were always surrounded by hundreds of birds and Ismael pointed out the different species.
During this time, we saw pelicans, peruvian boobies, and Humboldt penguins! Some of the birds could even be see diving in and out of the water to catch fish. So beautiful.
Eventually we made it to the Palomino island, where there were over 8000 sea lions! It was a mind-blowing sight, seeing so many of them in one place. They covered the island and we watched them as they crawled over each other and jumped in the water.
Then it was time to jump in! The water was definitely cold but it was 100% worth it. The sealions were so friendly and curious, coming very close to us. There was a moment in which a sea lion suddenly popped out of the water, super close to my friend and I. This was a magical moment where we were so amazed, surprised, and happy. We couldn't stop laughing and smiling.
I highly recommend this tour to everyone who loves seeing animals in their natural habitat, biodiversity, and beautiful coastal geology. This experience was worth every dollar!
This was a great opportunity to have ethical interactions with animals, as we made sure to let them approach us, didn't feed them, and didn't get too close to their island.
Ismael, our guide, was extremely charismatic, helpful, and knowledgeable. He was always checking in on us, smiling, and made us feel comfortable. He responded well to questions and provided us everything we needed. He also had a great sense of humour and made sure to explain everything in both Spanish and English.
Fernando, our boat captain, was great. He made sure to rotate the boat so that both sides of the boat could see the animals.
Lastly, our driver, Kenji, was also very knowledgeable and accommodating. We really appreciated that he waited longer for us when the boat was a little late arriving to the shore. While driving, he gave us recommendations for food and places to visit.
I would only note to bring medication if you easily get sick, because the boat is a bit bouncy and the sea lions don't smell too great hahaha. Going into the water is optional if you're uncomfortable with cold water or being close to the animals, so you can stay in the boat if you prefer!
Overall, I loved this experience and am so grateful that I had the opportunity to do this! Thank you to the entire team!!
