The 4-day Salkantay trek was a breathtaking experience. The trek is a no-hassle way to hike through the breathtaking Andes mountains and see the various sights. There are a lot of accommodations for people at different skill, health, and abilities. The guides carry oxygen tanks and will offer different modes of transportation if you are not feeling up for hiking. Niko, our guide, took great care of my athletic 65-year-old mother. He made sure she did not slip downhill when the terrain was especially slippery and her footwork was a bit compromised from exertion. Several members of our group decided to use porter horses, buses, and trains to get to our next sightseeing landmark. The informational session a day before is incredibly useful to ease any further concerns.
The trek was well-organized. The logistics were seamless, and the team's attention to detail made the physically demanding trek much more manageable. One of my favorite memories from this is drinking hot coca tea at the wintery Salkantay Pass. Shoutout to our cook Vidal for bringing it up for us.
Overall, the 4-day Salkantay trek was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Our guide Nico played a key role in making it even more memorable. I call our trek "gliking" short for glamorous hiking. There are beautiful camp stays, some wifi available, some hot showers, multi-course meals, snacks, porters, and a treasure trove of sites and experiences. The cherry on top is after completion, you are left with a sense of accomplishment! Highly recommended!
