What travelers are saying
- Lilian LangNew Hampshire2 contributionsBeautiful colors, hard-working people selling their organic produce, clean and vibrant environment. This market has everything for your belly and your curiosity.Written January 25, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - vastvcPoulsbo, WA35 contributionsMy wife and I are interested in authentic, locally made, artisan crafts when we travel, rather than the run-of the-mill souvenirs found in many tourist shops. Xapiri didn't disappoint!
The crafts are beautiful, and the staff incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. We returned multiple times to purchase gifts for ourselves and family, and to just browse the intricate arts.
The shop's mission is to promote, and help support the culture, of the indigenous tribes living in the Amazon. They have an extensive library, and many videos, on the people, areas and the making of particular crafts. Think fair trade when much of the profits are returned to the artisans and local communities.
We purchased a fishing net, a painting, a maraca and a clay 'Tapir' figurine. All beautiful!
We spoke mostly with Maria, a university student who is in her last semester of earning a degree in Archeology. She couldn't have been more gracious in answering all our questions about the items and how best to package them to either pack in our luggage or have shipped.

Made my day to speak to him about his weaving and learn about his techniques in weaving. If you love color and history pre Inca, this is the place to be. His imagination is endless. Each piece is a story and just so magical in the presentation of color and stitch detail.Written October 5, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Priscila NSao Paulo, SP221 contributionsA lot of religious art in a carved wood building.

- VWVagsSan Diego, CA41 contributionsThis is where the locals come to shop. El Baratillo has everything from super inexpensive souvenirs to brand name second-hand hiking clothes and shoes. We found Salomon hiking boots in perfect shape that fit my husband's big feet for $35. Retail $175.
There is so much hiking clothes and shoes to choose from. The used hiking shoes/boots are in a separate white building just down the main market area. Ask the locals where, and they'll show you the way. At the main market I bought souvenirs for 1/4 of the asking price at the Pisac market.
El Baratillo market is walking distance from Plaza de Armas no need for a taxi. The market can get a bit crowded in some areas but otherwise the experience is great!Written February 24, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The staff are friendly and helpful, the craftsmanship is amazing, and the prices are reasonable. The piece we bought has a three dimensional effect and certainly took many hours to create. There are other less expensive items in the shop as well, that deserve your attention. Peru textiles are really something special!Written May 24, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- amikoonseWarroad, MN68 contributionsVery nice mall. I appreciated some American shops and restaurants after being away from home for weeks. I had to show my vaccination card at the door to get in. From the plaza it cost 10 Soles each way.Written July 13, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- kellen56Escondido, CA51 contributionsWe bought two pieces from their shop in Urubamba last June. We paid $100 USD to have them shipped because they were heavy and we were at the beginning of our trip.
They arrived in July and the bowl was cracked and chipped on either side of the rim. We contacted Tater and provided photos of our receipt as well as the bowl.
Forward to 6 months later and we still do not have a resolution on this. Apparently they do not ship things insured so if we want another bowl we have to pay another $100 in shipping.
That is the value of the bowl itself.
Our credit card company coverage of this ran out at month 3, which I somewhat suspect Tater knows, so we are at an impasse.
Such a shame that the beautiful work is not matched by decent customer service. If you cannot carry it home, pass them by. If you are in Urubamba, go across the street to Ceramicas Seminario where they make equally beautiful pieces and know how to ship it overseas safely.
UPDATE:
We received a replacement bowl which I believe was prompted by my initial review. We assumed that it was at no cost to us because there was no note included. I think the take-away lesson is to buy from the main store whenever possible.Written May 14, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. These are the people who know about the Quechua and Aymara weaving of highland Peru. Back in the days, their shop was across the street from the railway station for trains to Machu Picchu, but they have been in this location on the Plaza de Armas for the last 30 years or so. Pablo and Gregorio are the brothers you are likely to find in the store these days, but it was Manuel who worked by his mother's side when I first found them 40 years ago; all have a degree of expertise that makes their conversations invaluable. Buy, if you can, since the items they have for sale are irreplaceable! Let them tell you about the different regions and their symbols, and be open to learning about a marvelous art form that is still alive and well, even though there are few of the old pieces left.Written November 18, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ScottWashington Dc, District Of Columbia, Usa63 contributionsWe visited a number of stores in Cusco to find the texture we wanted. The Centro de Textiles Tradicionales del Cusco was the best place to purchase high quality shawls, scarfs and textile products. The center serves as a clearinghouse for local textile makers and returns 70% of the profit to the artists. Each item you purchase comes with a certificate of authenticity and details on the artist. You can be guaranteed that the product you are purchasing is made of baby alpaca wool and not a fake substitute. While you might pay less at one of the other stores, the premium, if any, is worth the guarantee on quality and feeling that you are supporting local merchants.Written October 14, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
