What travelers are saying
- SridharEden Prairie, MN460 contributionsI ran early every morning in Cusco on various cobblestone streets and made it a point to cover San Pedro market on my route.
Located about 10mins away by walk from Plaza de Armas, San Pedro Market is a bustling marketplace that reflects the essence of local life. Your visit to Cusco is incomplete without visiting this market.
Vendors display their crafts, food, and textiles. In the late afternoon and evenings, we saw here locals mingle, sharing stories and smiles.
The colors, sounds, and scents of the market in the early morning hours are just to be experienced! The market offers a great opportunity to engage with the community and every purchase supports local families and traditions.
On the New Yeas Eve, everything was decorated in bright yellow color(signifies good luck and prosperity, per the locals). This included even the cats, dogs, alpaca that wore fancy dresses colored yellow. The street balconies were decorated with yellow balloons and ribbons. Wow, truly colorful!
My favorite was the fruit market in the mornings...wheel barrels that were fully loaded with colorful grapes! Coming back home, and when I see the grapes in Costco(produce of Peru), it reminds me of the San Pedro market!
Tips:
-Visit the market early in morning(must) and evenings(when the lights come on). See the colorful fruits, flowers veggies etc.
-Take your camera with you.
- You can bargain the prices . It is a common practice and widely accepted in the market.Written January 19, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - WorldTraveler639Montreal, Canada298 contributionsWe stopped here for hot chocolate and a brownie after reading all of the amazing reviews and we were not disappointed. The brownie was perhaps the best we've ever had in our lives... - EmBerlin, Germany105 contributionsVery interesting exhibition about the history and importance of textile in native culture and daily life, including many examples of traditional patterns, styles and techniques.
The exhibition is in a side room of the store. In the main room, there were two women sitting and weaving together. Around, many different products are offered for sale, from full ponchos and blankets to small coin purses and gloves.
There are also additional live demostrations. However, I didn't visit them and can not attest.Written May 10, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. El Baratillo has everything from super inexpensive souvenirs to brand name second-hand hiking clothes and shoes. We found Salomon hiking boots in perfect shape that fit my husband's big feet for $35. Retail $175.
There is so much hiking clothes and shoes to choose from. The used hiking shoes/boots are in a separate white building just down the main market area. Ask the locals where, and they'll show you the way. At the main market I bought souvenirs for 1/4 of the asking price at the Pisac market.
El Baratillo market is walking distance from Plaza de Armas no need for a taxi. The market can get a bit crowded in some areas but otherwise the experience is great!Written February 24, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Thoroughly enjoyed feeding the llamas, alpacas and Vicuñas and leaning about their processes with fiber. And the gift shop was full of beautiful and fun things made of baby alpaca wool, prices were lower than in Cuzco and the quality was high.Written September 22, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
