Known to locals as the Crystal Palace, the cultural center is made of glass, steel, and zinc, and is situated in such a way as to not need lighting during the day. Originally the Santa Clara Market, it was moved to its present location in pieces, after having been in use elsewhere in Quito since 1920. Building components were imported from Hamburg, Germany. It houses meeting and event space. Even if you aren't going there to experience an event, it is worth seeing. It sits atop the hill of Itchimbia, the site of an aboriginal settlement, dedicated to the worship of the gods, with emphasis on Inti.

Please look at the YouTube and you will see Carole. She, herself, gives you the tour of her art, her life. For anyone with interest in the creative process, art, psychology, architecture, LIFE, this Gallery will transport you inwardly, as well as technically. Her gallery is in her restored home, full of mystery and discovery.

I believe it is a spot not to be missed if you plan a long stay in Quito and you need a place to work for some hours and eat lunch or have some coffee (the cafeteria offers great local dishes). Also if you feel comfortable speaking Spanish and wish to take a class or two during your stay (they have yoga and dancing classes, and even a photography laboratory where you can develop your photos). Also, they program many different performances such as plays and concerts. If you stay in the city only for a few days, you might not be able to go to one, but it would still be a great spot to look for arts books and enjoy a good coffee with bolón de verde.

Funny, creative styles. Original artwork. Graphic prints on t-shirts, bookmarks, stickers, magnets, post cards, etc. Combines historical Quechua and Spanish cultural influences with urban influences for unique, fresh results. Gift boxes are folded card stock that unfolds into a poster that includes more art - great presentation for a gift! Staff were helpful - enthusiastic but not at all pushy. Then when I asked it came out that one was the artist.

Nelson Román is an extraordinary ecuadorian artist. His paintings are unique pieces exploding with color and mysticism. You can visit the gallery upstairs Casa Santa Bárabara and meet him personally. He will give you a tour of his "Taller" and later on you can visit the Ojo del Jaguar Boutique. Here you can find objects to take home that will remind you of the very special experience which is to meet such an amazing artist and his work in person.

If you're looking for handmade art, souvenirs and gift items, this place is great. Perfect spot to stop after visiting the Mariscal mercado de artesanías, especially when you're a little tired of the same old souvenirs. You can get fun clothes, kids' toys and dolls, art prints, ceramics, soaps, notebooks, jewelry, candles and more, all made by local artisans.
