The drive between El Calafate and El Chalten is lovely, with mountains and glaciers revealing themselves, a variety of wildlife, and the road surface is good.
Nevertheless wildlife were easily spotted fairly close to the road including Patagonian grey foxes, Darwin's Lesser Rhea (called ñandú locally) and, of course, guanaco.
