The Spanish-era architecture is beautifully preserved, and it’s easy to get lost in the charm of this historic district in the heart of Manila.

I'm not a mall person but I love this charming, walkable Makati mall with all its lush green spaces and water features; familiar brands and chain stores, as well as local retail places, and European stores; its fairly sizable selection of eateries and coffee places; and its overall chill vibe.

Americans and Europeans, don't expect to pay lower prices here for brands you know back home. This is definitely a go-to place for affluent locals as many of the stores are high-end brands like Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Balenciaga, and a slew of others. There are more affordable options as well such as Zara, Mango, Adidas, Puma, and a number of other retailers. Prices for clothing, shoes, and accessories are pretty much the same as you'd pay in the west. (If you're looking for Filipino souvenirs, though, I recommend heading the Kultura in the Glorietta Mall instead.)

There are several really good restaurants, too. We had a memorable al fresco ribeye dinner at a wonderful steak house called Ember; prices were slightly less than what we'd pay for a comparable meal where we live in the expensive San Francisco Bay Area. We also had a fabulous Italian lunch at a spot called Tartufo across the way from Ember. We had Japanese food at Nikkei Robata, which was really affordable, and served one of the best mango slushies I've had in the Philippines.

Oh! And if you have a sweet tooth and need a sugar fix, we went to the British department store Marks & Spencer's snack shop multiple times for chocolates, gummies, and other treats. We still crave these delicious little gummy pigs we kept buying there but can't get back home.

But one of the most fun things to do at Greenbelt is to people watch. Grab something cool to drink, find a nice shady spot to chill out, then sit back and watch the locals strolling and conversing, rushing to their next destination, or have a nice chat with one of them. There's such a mellow, relaxed vibe there.

One thing that was initially off putting for my companion was that there's an open air church and they have mass a few times a day. It's standing room only sometimes and it can get loud, especially when there's singing. I had to remind my travel partner that the Philippines is majority Catholic and Filipinos take their religion seriously. He got used to it and didn't bat an eye when church hymns were being sung as we dined at Ember.

If you're planning a trip to a remote part of the Philippines and need a place to decompress from the rustic living before you head back home, a visit or two to Greenbelt might be a nice coda to your Philippine travel. I'm Filipino American and I usually hang out in Makati and Greenbelt for a couple of days before I fly to my family's province to visit relatives and a couple of days before I head back home to the US. It's a nice place to decompress.

Hiking Banaue rice terraces was a spectacular experience. The region is raw and authentic, amazing people and safe.

Special thanks to Jercy Cabbigat, the local tour guide who helped me plan my trip to Banaue and was there with me until I got on the bus leaving Banaue. Jercy provided me a customised itinerary bearing my interests and preference of difficulty level in hiking. He kept in constant touch me so that I reach Banue safely since I was traveling solo.

Jercy took care of me like his family and I felt at home the four days I spent in Banaue. We exchanged stories, I learnt a lot about the mountain people, and their lifestyle. Jercy even made me get on a Jeepney for a ride when I expressed my interest. His pricing was also nominal compared to the organised tours advertised online. Highly recommend Jercy anytime, he can be found on Facebook.

    Thanks once again, Jercy

There are some moving, enlightening and at times horrifying exhibitions and information panels in this complex, which is all that remains of historical Manila. Very much worth spending an hour or two in if you're exploring Intramuros.

A perfect cone, Mayon Volcano is a testament of nature's artistry...Mayon is also steeped in rich history and culture. Cagsagwa ruins offers a glimpse into the past of a church buried by pas eruptions.

Modern, clean and upmarket. High-rise buildings, nice shopping areas, eateries, parks and more. Wide roads. Safe area and nice to take a walk and browse.

The place inside is amazing no doubt considering the variety of animals and aquatic life. The highlights for me were the crazily fun sea lion show, bird show, and reptile show all in one as well as the open area section where we could touch the sting rays and feed them. The kuyas upstairs were super friendly! However, the sad part about the place were its first impressions from when you first enter where the walls are faded and cracked, but nothing a few coats of paint and better maintenance wouldn’t fix. We also got to see the penguins which is another highlight, but they only let you in for two minutes and expect you to leave for 700Php. Maybe a couple more minutes would’ve made me appreciate the penguins a but more up close. I get that they’re very strict with the animals, but maybe the price point isn’t worth it for that 2 minute experience. The ladies handling the finances for the penguins were also a bit grumpy looking.

Nonetheless, aside from a few grumpy staff workers, going there for the animals and cute plushies still makes for the best experience to be remembered for the next few years to come.

Rizal park also popularly known as Luneta Park, is a big urban park in manila. Its clean and beautiful. Many people go there to stroll or exercise. Best to go there early morning or late afternoon to avoid the scourching heat of the sun and be able to enjoy the cool breeze.

Great experience! We booked a tour of Batad rice terraces with Jercy Cabbigat ( you can find him on messenger Facebook) after reading several fantastic reviews from other travellers. Jercy met us straight off the overnight bus from Manila and is so knowledgable with the area and we had an amazing, memorable tour with him! He is a lovely guy and he will go out of his way to ensure you have the best time! The accommodation and hospitality he provided was first class! We would recommend him to anyone! Thank you Jercy! The building dates to 1586, constructed in the Baroque style, completed in 1604 and consecrated in 1607 and is regarded as the oldest stone church in the country. The building has survived earthquakes, fire sacking, war, it served as a hospital in 1863 and as a concentration camp by the Japanese during WW11. Although damaged, it was the only building in Intramuros that survived the war.
