    Then we drove to the second stop of the day: Nasu Animal Kingdom 那須動物王國. It is famous for having many animal shows, including Bird Performance Show, Cat Show, New Zealand Farm Show, and Aqua Friends.

    There are also areas where visitors can interact with animals closely, such as Capybara Forest, Alpaca Hill, Tropical Rainforest. We had a good time in the park, with the opportunity to interact with the animals, many we had not seen before let alone be in such close proximity.

    During the visit, one can also experience the nice ambiance of the Nasu Highland. Approaching noon we decided to have lunch at the Yamaneko Terrace, going for a soy sauce ramen while enjoying the gorgeous view in the backdrop.

    The Niigata City Aquarium was a nice surprise excursion. Very modern and the exhibits were professionally done and educational. Don't expect the caliber of the Monterey Bay Aquarium, San Diego's Sea World, or Chicago's Shedd Aquarium, but well worth the visit. No huge crowds when we toured at the peak of the tourism season and all exhibits were in close walking distance. Fun to see the animals up close and not peering over people's head and shoulders. Even has a good popular restaurant on site or you can bring your own lunch.

    Otaru Aquarium is small and bit outdated but has interesting attractions like pinguin parade, unique local fish, kids can touch octopus, walrus show and much more. Make sure to check the show timetable before you come!

    Notes:
    - During rainy day the walk to aquarium can be challenging because you need to climb lot of steps from the bus station to the aquarium
    - People with disability will have a problem to walk thru mainy stairs. Please check with staff for better solution.
    - Its pretty convenient to use public bus from the otaru main station to the aquarium
    - If you come earlier and have a good weather you can explore surrounding area near the aquarium. There’s a replica of old fisherman village. The surrounding view is very nice!

    If you can go off season I really recommend this place. In summer it can get very busy, access through car can be time consuming as the roads in and out are quite narrow, one lane often.
    The park is well laid out with lots of wildlife and safari tours. There are also theme park rides for kids from 3 or 4 years old. The restaurants are reasonable and the giftshops have lots to bring back home with you.
    There are many shows so if you plan your visit before you arrive you can fit in a lot of activities.

    Nice variety of local and tropical environments. Informative for older children, tropical fish for young children to follow, relaxing for adults.

    Very good size for a half day trip to see the shows. Check the show schedule before you visit.

    A bit cold in winter.

    The Neo park has a big area with birds that my son loves it so much. Besides that, the train ride at the park was his favorite and he got so excited to see different types of animals. The part where he was able get close up and touch the goat was the highlight of his day. Highly recommended for families with young children.
    On the flip side, the snack bar near the light railway doesn't offer much choice and the quality is rather poor.

    This place was a great surprise. The vast collection of marine life here was unbelievable. ¥500 for adults. The touching pool was better than any I've seen at any aquarium worldwide. Well done.

    The aquarium is quite small and only took an hour to walk round. The exhibits all focussed on the deep sea and were different and really interesting, especially the massive spider crabs.

    Great Aquarium; lots of amazing exhibits. I think they are taking the COVID protection a little too far by closing things that don't need it (exhibits, etc). See the Christmas show 100%.

    Toba aquarium is a nice attraction with the animals generally seeming well looked after. Visiting on a rainy day it was quite busy inside, but the spaces inside were large enough that it did not feel too crowded. It was interesting to watch the staff taking the penguins and sea lions for a watch around areas of the venue and it allowed opportunities to closer interaction.

    I was rather unsure about the octopus touch pool. It was an interesting experience; however, there did not seem to be staff monitoring it and the octopuses did not appear happy with being touched.

    The aquarium does have few shows and feeding sessions, but I did not have the opportunity to watch any during my visit. For international visitors there is a map and information sheet, as well as signage around the attraction, in English, but more detailed information on exhibits was only in Japanese.

    The aquarium is worth a visit if you are in the area; however, I would not travel to Toba just to visit this aquarium.

    We really liked Nagasaki Bio Park so we travelled to this zoo which seems similar in a few respects. This zoo has less opportunity to get in with the animals themselves, but is overall a great attraction.

    What we liked:
    The view - ocean on one side, extinct volcano on the other;
    The food - cactus burger was excellent, cactus icecream also excellent. The coffee and cake from the cafe just near the bus stop is spectacular;
    animals look to be well cared for, and the keepers look to really love them;
    nice, clean facilities;
    interesting layout;
    pretty reasonable price.

    Not so much...pumping 200yen into dozens of food stations to feed the guys, though it is a good way to control the food for the animals and really another sign that they are looking after them well.

    If you love birds! This is a place for the family! Feeding Flamingos, Parrots eating off your head and the highlight for me was having dozens of fish cleaning your feet! Definitely worth the visit!!

    A small ,rather old place, but excellent to see jellyfish.And eat icecream containing jellyfish,very tasty,with the chewy bits being the jellyfish.
    Many of the tanks being rather small for the amount of fish etc in them.Probably because of the age of the building.
    The variety of the jellyfish is large and very interesting.
