- Kendra BBoulder, CO440 contributionsA very interesting cemetary - the night tour is very cool and you should definitely do this when in Koyasan to understand the history of the cemetary and shinto buddism.Written November 21, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
The temple is the family temple of the Ii clan and is closely related to the rise of the Ii clan. It can be reached by bus, but due to the limited number of buses, most visitors use their own cars or rent a car.
The Japanese garden located on the north side of the main hall is so wonderful, but not only the garden, but the whole temple precincts are wonderful. The garden on the north side of the main hall cannot be enjoyed for free, as there is a fee to enter the main hall. But all the areas that can be accessed for free are carefully maintained, and one cannot help but be grateful for the efforts of the people who meticulously maintain the temple.
Although the temple was used as a stage for one of the NHK Taiga TV dramas, there are not so many people visiting the temple even on holidays, probably because of its distance from the center of Hamamatsu city. You can visit the temple in peace and quiet.Written December 24, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. With our guide we slowly walked around the cemetery in its longest dimension, and we were shown some features of Japanese tombs: for example, the presence of vertical wooden planks on the tomb, called “sotoba” with inscriptions reporting the name, date of death of the deceased and prayers. Each anniversary a new sotoba is added; so the presence of numerous sotoba indicates that the tomb is constantly cared for.
We were also told that the cemetery was once on the land of the nearby Tennō-ji temple; but that in 1872 the authorities confiscated the land and made the cemetery public. The action is understandable in the context of the religious policy of Japan at the time, aiming to reclaim Shintoism (understood as the original Japanese religion) as distinct from Buddhism: and Tennō-ji is indeed a Buddhist temple.
Moreover, as far as I understand, the majority of the Japanese population professing a religion, still considers Shintoism and Buddhism interchangeable, and practices one or the other rite depending on the occasion.
Overall, it was an interesting and pleasant visit.Written September 26, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The Cherry Blossoms were in full bloom, so it was vibrant with people and colour. We felt a bit like an intruder as this is a special place for the locals, as such we did not take any photos of the shrine just a couple snaps of the trees and left.Written April 8, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - BarkCatChristchurch, New Zealand37 contributionsAfter seeing the other tumuli in Asuka, it was interesting to be able to see the massive stone structure underneath and actually be able to walk inside it. It doesn't require a long visit and I wouldn't suggest going to Asuka just to look at it but if you are in town it is definitely worth seeing.Written September 29, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - warren DVladivostok, Russia3,222 contributionsA great strolling place especially during the cherry blossom season. I am a walker and love to stroll past Aoyama Cemetery continuing along spacious avenues to Akasaka-Mitsuke and beyond to the Imperial Palace.Written December 15, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Start from the Odori Station, take the JR Namboku line to the Makomanai Station. Go to the bus stop in front of the station for local bus #106. It’s about a 20+minute ride up a hill with several local bus stops and get off at the Takino Cemetery stop (can’t miss the large entrance with iron gate and visible Moai Statues).
My wife and I were lucky that it was a clear sunshiny day. The Moai statues were stunning to see in person. As you walk the grounds there were many other Buddhist statues and a collection of stone objects to see. Plus the Hill of the Buddha statue is also located at this same location. A nice day excursion from Sapporo well worth seeing that my wife and I totally enjoyed.Written October 2, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. If you arrive during the week there are barriers to prevent you from seeing more than a few graves, but if you come on the weekends or a national holiday, access to a bigger section is provided for a donation to the volunteer committee which maintains and operates the cemetery and you can visit the small museum inside the main gates. Even then it is only a small proportion of the 4200 graves that can be visited.Written August 31, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - MeredithAussieMelbourne, Australia1,840 contributionsWe attended the very moving Anzac Day ceremony. The cemetery is in Hodogaya, easily accessible from Tokyo on the Yokosuka line express train, but we then opted for a taxi from the station to ensure we arrived on time.
Like all Commonwealth War Graves Cemeteries the world over, this one is beautifully landscaped and maintained. It is a place of peace and reflection. There are five sections: UK, Australian, Canadian and New Zealand, Indian, and post-war. Graves are those of service personnel who died while prisoners of war within Japan (although there are some from China as well). The post-war section holds the graves of those who died during the Occupation, the Korean War, and others. This includes Ray Simpson VC, who moved to Japan with his Japanese wife more recently.
It’s worth spending a few moments here reflecting on the service and sacrifice of so many.Written June 4, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. This is the bottom part of the shrine, and once only Shogun was allowed to come this place. Now, passing under Nemurineko, a sleeping cat, everybody can visit it. But you have to climb stairs.Written September 5, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Mark TAgeo, Japan610 contributionsKoboyama is an old burial mound. The mound is well known for its super pink sakura flowers. It took 30 minutes to get there from Minami Matsumoto station. You may use a bus or taxi from Matsumoto station. The elevation is around 600 meters. I could use stairs to get to the top. That was a breathtaking view!Written April 19, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Kimitaka STaichung, Taiwan15,336 contributionsEverybody knows Toyotomi Hideyoshi, but not all people know where is his grave. In Higashiyama ward in Kyoto, there is an imposing mausoleum. It is on the top of a small mountain, and it takes about 20 minutes to climb the hill. However, it worth visiting. The entrance costs $1.Written January 20, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- RayParksAdelaide, Australia2,862 contributionsAfter visiting Yanaka Cemeteries where cherry blossoms were in full bloom, we came to Zoshigaya Cemeteries surrounded by greeneries. It’s another cemeteries administered by the city of Tokyo. As the traffic was very heavy, we had a good look from outside the fence line. Our taxi driver told us that many famous people had been buried there.Written April 5, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
