    Nishiki Market Review

Nishiki Market is a must-visit spot for any food lover in Kyoto, and it’s especially popular with tourists. Be prepared for crowds, as the narrow alleys get quite packed, especially on weekends. However, the vibrant atmosphere and variety of foods make it worth navigating through the bustle.

The market offers a fantastic selection of traditional Japanese foods. Shrimp skewers are a standout, along with fresh sashimi, savory ramen, and unique local delicacies. Many stalls also have quick bites and samples, making it easy to taste a bit of everything. If you’re patient with the crowds, you’re in for an authentic Japanese food experience that’s both delicious and memorable.

If you want to go to an animal cafe🐈☕️ this is the street to do it on. We did not go in any but there were plenty of options. There is also lots of takeaway 🥡food options we had macha icecream 🍦 sugar fruit sticks and octopus 🐙 balls.

It is worth a visit to the huge and busy Kyoto Station if you have some time. Make sure you stop by the Daikaiden-Giant Grand Staircase from 5p.m. - 10p.m. each day on as the staircase is lit up from the 3rd floor to the 8th floor with colorful flashing LED lights of different themes depending on the month and season as the images are depicted accordingly. During our visit in July, the theme was "Summer- Gion Festival Lights." It was very colorful and many different scenes change and move around the staircase itself that acts as a background screen.
There are no seats so make yourself comfortable by locating a good spot to view the lighted staircase. Also, there are people who sit and/or run up and down the staircase, so it may obstruct your view or while you are taking photos as it is a working staircase. Definitely worth a stop for a short break over to view it if you are in the Kyoto Station after sunset.

This was my first time visiting a yokocho. There were more stalls and stores than I thought there would be, which was pleasantly surprising. I liked the options for eating in between all of the shopping.

This is a huge Premium Outlet; just a day isn’t enough time. And careful, it’s easy to get lost. Parking is free. All the parking lots surround the outlet mall; so no need to take the first entrance.

If you have been to Premium outlet malls in USA, Canada, or Malaysia, you’ll find this outlet mall is expensive with no deals to be had. Perhaps it’s due to the products being imported into Japan with a premium tax.

It is all relative in my opinion though. If you come from Singapore or Hong Kong just for examples where premium goods are expensive, you might find something here.

I visited Roppongi Hills Art Night in 2024, and it was a captivating event that blended contemporary art with entertainment. The diverse art installations and performances provided visitors with a refreshing visual experience.

Taking place at night, the event created a magical atmosphere as the entire area became enveloped in art. Features like artist interactions and workshops added an engaging, participatory element. While it can get crowded, the experience was well worth it. It’s a fantastic event not only for art enthusiasts but also for those exploring art for the first time.

Visiting the food hall is an absolute must when in Shinjuku, Japan. Vendors sell a huge range of products and it's incredible to see the artistry of the cakes, bakery and other confections, the array of fish and meat and super fresh fruit and vegetables. It's certainly not cheap to buy your weekly food shopping, but find something for a special treat, and you won't regret it.

Karuizawa is a very pretty mountain resort town worth a visit. Easy access to the Shiraito Falls and Harunire Terrace by bus from Ginza street. A few Catholic Churches are well a visit. The Prince Shopping Plaza by the train station is just an added feature and offers a beautiful, vast garden/lawn with playground. The shops along Karuizawa Ginza are cute and with enough variety. One or better yet, two nights is ample time to enjoy the sights and restaurants.

Lots of the shops here seem to be of the type you could find anywhere else in Japan, China, UK, US, etc., nothing particularly special. However ‘Raumen Stadium’ on the fifth floor makes it worth visiting, definitely, as it’s wonderful.

In Singapore, the fabulous Marina Bay Sands rose out from reclaimed lands. Tokyo boasts of Odaiba, the artificial island that born out of land reclamation. Diver city Tokyo Plaza is a huge shopping mall located at Odaiba. The first iconic symbol that we saw was the giant fictional robot Gundam that stands robustly right outside the mall. We felt like dwarfs looking up at this fantastic structure.

The aunties in my tour group like shopping and they came here to buy pharmaceutical products. The retail pharmacy in the mall was packed with tourists especially those from Taiwan. We could differentiate them from the mainland Chinese by their Hokkein accent. One or two pharmacy cashiers could speak Mandarin and the tourist crowd gathered around her.

We spent almost half an hour here. While the rest were browsing the pharmaceutical shelves, I went around looking at some of the shops. One shop has Hello Kitty as the theme selling toys, apparel, etc. Another shop sells most items from Hokkaido and some of us bought and tasted the Hokkaido ice cream. The name of the Food Court is Tokyo Gourmet Stadium, what a funny name. If you label Singapore Food Court in the mall as Singapore Gourmet Stadium, I think most Singaporeans would feel awkward. I went into one gift shop and found that most gifts were made in China.

The aunties were very well satisfied with their adventure inside the retail pharmacy. At the end of the shopping spree, every aunty was carrying large bags of pharmaceutical goods. Japanese pharmaceutical products command prestigious reputation for being of superb quality standard though they are costly.

Ikspiari is the Tokyo Downtown Disney. It is one of the stops on the monorail so it was very convenient to get to, especially since we stayed at the Hilton Tokyo Bay. We came here twice during our 3 night stay at the hotel.

One of the times, we came here to pick up dinner around 8:30pm. Unfortunately, one of the places I was hoping to go to was already closed. So make sure you check hours if you go later in the evening. We did watch the short fireworks display though from here which was a surprise!

The main shopping we did while here was at the 2 Disney stores. One is Bon Voyage, which has the same items as in the parks. It was very busy when we were there. The other is the Disney Store that has unique items not found in the park. The prices, I feel, are a bit higher than in the parks, but still cheaper than you can find in the US. I bought a few Baymax items that I liked more than what the parks offered.

Multistory mall kinda attached to the Skytree. Multiple mid-range stores. As well as the food court there are full restaurants up on the 6th floor. Well worth visiting if you going to Skytree

What a great place to walk around looking at a mix of new and vintage toys and memorabilia. Prices ranged from reasonable to not so.

Shop operators were accomodating and obliging as requests came through. Enjoyed the few hours wandering, there was plenty of food/drinks and more re replenish your energy.

Overall great, would recommend - only downside was many shops were not open (maybe don’t open) and it was 2pm.
