- Jim108 contributionsIstiklal Mosque is one of the largest mosques in the world. The mosque offered a guided tour for tourist every 30 minutes. Incoming tourist are guided to a waiting room, in which you side up for tour service (provides basic information, such as family name, country of origin, etc.). The information is not checked.
During the guided tour of the Mosque, you will be asked to remove your shoes before entering the mosque. A bag is provided to carry your shoes. You are also provided with Hajib, though it seems to be optional during the visit.
The guided tour takes a quick walk around the Mosque, which has 5 floors and may accommodate up to 120,000 people. Though during our visit, it doesn’t seem to be anywhere near at capacity (we visited during the Night Journey of the Prophet Muhammad SAW day). You can take pictures within the Mosque. The entire tour take about 0.5 hour.Written February 9, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We had to wait until the dignitaries with police escort passed through before we were allowed to approach the gates. Impressive monument from a distance, 137m high obelisk topped with a 14.5m bronze flame coated with 32kg of gold leaf.Written December 27, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Dan LBunbury, Australia7,494 contributionsWe were looking forward to our visit only to discover that barriers were erected across the aisles at the rear pews and no artificial lighting through the nave. Took a long distant photo of the altar and a few plaques and statues at the rear. The building is neo-Gothic style with distinctive white spires extending over the front of the building. The Cathedral dates to 1901, replacing an earlier structure from 1829 that collapses in 1890.Written December 27, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Dan LBunbury, Australia7,494 contributionsThe area was once the first walled settlement of the Dutch colonists in Jakarta, and later became the de facto capital of the Dutch East Indies. The area was proclaimed a heritage site in 1972 by the Governor of Jakarta. Our guide mentioned that many buildings were allowed to fall into disrepair or were demolished despite the heritage listing. A revitalisation of the area commenced in 2005 and 16 buildings were restored by 2014. We enjoyed our stroll and visits to the museum.Written December 27, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Dan LBunbury, Australia7,494 contributionsInteresting guided walk through the former Batavia City Square, plenty of locals and tourists about, kiddies playing on the ancient cannons, a couple of human statues, lovely colonial buildings along the boundaries and the museums. Unfortunately, the fountain was in a state of disrepair.Written December 27, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - StotheNStockholm, Sweden547 contributionsI visited on an offday and missed its hustle and bustle. It was Eid al Fitr and people were off. There were no trucks but so many wooden boats moored as in a line up. It would have been better for me to come on another busy day to finger the pulse of this place.Written April 24, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
