- Mike GPerth, Australia4 contributionsI walked in to HK tourism Board office at Tsim Sha Tsui with 1000 questions on my first day in HK without expecting too much. I was immediately greeted by the staff and asked how they could help me. One by one, they answered my questions
with practical information customised to my interests. Until then I was finding it very hard and frustrating to access good visitor information in English beyond the standard google info - not forgetting that I don't speak any Chinese dialects in a Chinese-speaking region.
I left feeling confident about getting around HK and happy to start my adventure 😃 A HUGE thanks to the helpful staff there, especially super-volunteers Johnson, Ashley
and Ray!Written January 21, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Been to Hong Kong many times and I would say I've never seen the bridges like that before. Try to go on a nice sunny day, or during sunset!Written March 29, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- ChicagoBoiseGirlChurchill National Park, Australia39 contributionsMy husband and I spent two days with Canny and she was an incredible guide. She is a long time resident of Hong Kong and experienced tour guide and she knows deeper stories and has better insights than any guide we have ever had. She was flexible about customizing things that we wanted to see that are not on the "usual" list (for example: the 10,000 Buddha Monastery) and when we said we wanted to experience Hong Kong like a local, she truly understood what we meant. We walked, took the train, rode the tram, experienced a ferry ride, and saw everything we wanted to see in Hong Kong. She also showed us where to find some other things we wanted to do on our own. We can't say enough good things about the whole experience with Canny and also with our booking with Chris. Highly, highly recommend Chris Rowthorn Tours Hong Kong and our tour guide Canny.Written March 4, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - LouC151Toronto, Canada533 contributionsThis nice little gift shop is just steps away from the Peak Tram terminal and Madam Tussauds, and without the huge crowds! It has a fairly good selection of boutique items for sale that's environmentally friendly. The prices are reasonable and they accept credit cards (visa/MC); it's a great place to do some quick shopping in an quiet place while you're on your way to Hong Kong Park or the Peak - and you can shop for a good cause!Written March 30, 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - serenescene1818Boston, MA32 contributionsBeautiful! Not like what you would think Hong Kong looks like. Easily accessible by bus and the ride is very scenic. - BradHong Kong, China181,205 contributionsYou will encounter the Sai Wan Village Tourist Information Centre along the trail leading into the village from the direction of the Sai Wan Pavilion (Tai long Wan Hiking Trail) or from Long Ke Wan beach (MacLehose Trail Stage 2). It is open from 10.30am to 4pm (Saturdays, Sundays & Public Holidays).
Here you can learn about the extensive conservation efforts that are taking place in the area including the revitalisation of area farmlands, local houses and church that were abandoned or left in disrepair during the 20th century as depopulation hit the village, as has been the case with so many small villages scattered around the Sai Kung, New Territories and within many of HK's country parks. Here they are slowly but surely trying to bring the area back to life, spurred on by the flux of hikers and campers who flock to the area on weekends to enjoy some or Hong Kong's wildest and most beautiful rural landscape and beaches.
The centre and restoration efforts seem to be the result of volunteerism work under the Sai Wan Rehabilitation effort which you can also learn about on the website provided with this listing.Written November 7, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It is located as you enter the village from the south past the historic temple and monastery.
This is worth a quick visit to learn a bit about the village history as well as the area ecology and rare geological features which can be seen as part of a Nature Trail that runs south of Lai Chi Wo. All of which can be found on a nifty brochure found at the Centre or online if you prefer to print and have sometime prior to setting off on your visit.
During our recent visit, we enjoyed seeing the restored building with heritage room displays of daily life and agriculture equipment related to rice harvesting around Lai Chi Wo. It was a good way to acquire a short, abbreviated history of the village and to learn about rural sustainability endeavours that had been introduced to help revitalise what remains of Lai Chi Wo.
Overall, the Geo Heritage Centre is a nice endeavour worth the time and effort to include a brief stop for those visiting Lai Chi Wo on weekends and public holidays.Written December 14, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It is open from 9.30am to 4.30pm on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays.
This Visitor Centre offers a display rich educational experience that makes for a good 10-15 minute visit for those who want to learn about the area found within the Country Park. The exhibits include a brief history of the Park and how it came to be created, local war relics and mining industry as well as the flora and fauna which can be found in the area.
Exhibitions are brightly coloured and child friendly. While informative, they are not overly wordy so you can work through the displays at a good pace. They also have a few information brochures available including the nearby War Relics Trail which starts on the south end of the reservoir west of the Dam.
Note: Just below the Visitor Centre at the mini bus drop off and pick up there is a kiosk and public toilets for visitors to use before/after their hike around the reservoir.Written March 27, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It is normally open from 9.30am to 4.30pm daily (closed on Tuesdays) and is similar to Visitor Centres you may have been to in other country parks around Hong Kong.
There are public toilets, an outdoor kiosk selling refreshment drinks and snacks. Inside, you will find maps of the Tai Mo Shan Country Park and staff to answer questions you might have. There is an exhibition area with information about the geography and animal like around Tai Mo Shan as well as meteorology, climate change and the effects on various habitats including our local mountains and forests as well as the polar caps.
Note: Unfortunately the Visitor Centre is presently closed per government restrictions related to the 5th wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. This is the case with all country park Visitor Centres. However, the outdoor kiosk remains open so you can still pass by here for drinks and snacks while existing/entering the country park to/from Route Twisk.Written March 15, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Here you can learn about the relatively short history of habitation on Ap Chau and a bit on the culture of those who settled here. There is additional information related to the rare and unique geology, red breccia which makes up much of the island.
The Story Room is found in the old school building just above the village basketball court. It is only open on Sundays and Public Holidays (10-4pm) daily and can sufficiently been seen in 10-15 minutes.
Note: Unfortunately due to the pandemic, you might find the Ap Chau Story Room closed at this time. This is also the case of other geosite information centres within the UNESCO Global Geopark.Written January 31, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The Kat O Story Room first opened to the public in October 2019 and is normally open from 10am to 3.30pm on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays when passenger ferries call on the island from the Ma Liu Shui ferry pier at Science Park.
What you find here is a collection of historic pictures, cultural relics, oral accounts and panel displays revealing interesting information about the island's rich history, unique heritage and culture. All is nicely presented and can be comfortably viewed in 15-20 minutes before continuing on with other intended sightseeing around the island of Kat O.
Note: Due to the pandemic the Kat O Story Room is not presently open. This is what you will find with other Geosite centres and Story Room's elsewhere in the UNESCO Global Geopark.Written January 30, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
