- BradHong Kong, China175,609 contributionsThe Stanley Military Cemetery is found along Wong Ma Kok Road and is open to the public from 8am to 5pm daily. Historically, this was a colonial cemetery for those from the British garrison in Stanley until the 1860s. The cemetery was closed at that time and not used until the WWII era and Japanese Occupation.
Within the cemetery grounds you will find panel information about the Defence of Hong Kong in December 1941 which resulted in over 4,500 infantry and volunteer defence corps fatalities, many of whom were laid to rest here at the Stanley Military Cemetery.
As you walk the grounds you will find early colonial headstones (1840-60s) along with those who perished during the war (1940s). Also memorials to those who died but are not buried there. There was a register there which gave the names of all the fallen. Very thought provoking and very emotive.
Easy to get to. MTR to Chai Wan then the 16x bus which drops you right ourside. If you carry on up the hill you can get a bus back down to where you can get on the MTR again. We also saw the Bhuddist and Muslim cemeteries which take up a very large area of the hillside and valley below. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - BradHong Kong, China175,609 contributionsOne of the few green spaces in the Central District is the Memorial Garden at City Hall with opening hours of 7.30am to 10.30pm daily. It is a small and quiet enclosed garden that is dedicated to the memory of Chinese, British and Commonwealth soldiers who fought and fell during WWII.
The Memorial Garden includes a 12-sided memorial shrine within which is a Roll of Honour and plaques which list out the various military units that participated in the Great War. There is an interesting contemporary sculpture at the side of the shrine and impressive decorative emblems on the copper gates of the garden entrance.
Otherwise, the garden is rather simple with a few places to sit and relax and pay your respects.
