Uncrowded late March (tail end of the low season)we saw no more than 40 people enroute. It was impressive though restored. The dam was still iced over adding to the picturesque charm. Apparently the wild sections are no longer accessible due to the death of an American diplomat and his family 3 years ago (this is what local told us).

We had a fantastic day here. Clear blue skies enabled superb views of the wall as it stretches out into the mountains. We were both carrying injuries so didn't climb high but the views were still spectacular. The wall starts with a moderate climb which quickly becomes steep. There are shops inside the entrance offering drinks and souviners. It's a must do.

Outstanding skilled performance of stunts, dance and acrobatics by men, women and children in colourful costumes. Visually thrilling. The theatre itself was a bit run down and unkempt looking. We had reserved seats, but were told to "sit anywhere". We selected seats near the back and had a great overview. Strict instructions were given about no photography or videoing .. but still people chose to ignore this. However, the show itself was amazing and the acrobatics astounding. Highly recommended for an evening's entertainment.

I did quite a bit of research and settled on visiting this section of the Great Wall and I'm so glad I did! It's a beautiful stretch that looks barely touched, with a raw sense of beauty with it. The walls are just ankle deep, and the hike up is really steep and uneven. It's not recommended for those with knee problems or mobility issues. It's high up with a view of mountains and small town in the backdrop. The stretch between 6th to 8th guard post are recommended for trail. Truly a beauty to behold.

Went to Terracotta Army in Xian, The Great Wall of China and Forbidden City. All were excellent tours.
The only problem in China is that hardly anyone speaks English so you will have difficulty with communication which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. Almost all purchases are done through Alipay so download the app before you go. You can pay cash as well but your own card is almost not used.
Above China is full history and I enjoyed my trip very much. People are friendly enough.

We had a great time at Shilingxia Gorge (RMB68, opens 7:30am) and the UFO glass platform (RMB40) during a cool sunny day.

You can take the 2hr bus journey from Beijing or stay at the many simple village accommodations near the Gorge entrance so that you could start your day early to visit Shilinxia, Jindong Karst Caves and Tianyun mountain (with another glass bridge) all in the vincinity.

We decided to trek up along the stream (all paved paths), taking in the beautiful sights along the way. There was a direct stairway route up to the glass platform from the entrance but I imagine it would be quite a torturous climb and missing out a bigger part of the beautiful gorge. We spent about 4 1/2 hours there (leisurely, without cable car).

You can choose to take the cable car up (RMB100 each way). However, it would only bring you about 3/4 way up the mountain and one would still need to climb flights of stairs the rest of the way up.

    Getting there by bus:
If you are versed in the Chinese language, you could download the 高德地图 or Baidu map app (Chinese equivalent to Google map, with get clear instructions how to get to your destinations.

From Beijing, go to the Dongzhimen subway station and follow the signs to the "bus transfer hall" (Long-Distance BusHub). Take bus 852 (RMB15) to Pinggu district (1hr15m). Alight at Pinggu Hospital or any stop along this road. Then take either bus 25 or 38 to Shilinxia 石林峡 (RMB5, 40min). Buses and routes are all listed on the bus-stops (in Chinese).

A must-see attraction, but if you want to walk it you need a measure of fitness and determination, at least we did from our entry point. The steps were steep and uneven from a time when it was more important to slow down invaders than to attract tourists. At first we were left behind as younger members of the party dashed ahead, but we kept going slowly and eventually ascended further than any of them to enjoy superb views across the spectacular scenery.

I couldn't have asked for a better tour guide in Beijing! Our four-day experience was nothing short of exceptional thanks to our knowledgeable and expressive guide, Kevin. His in-depth knowledge of China's dynasties brought history to life with each story and detail. His efficiency in planning our itinerary ensured we maximized our time at every place of interest, allowing us to end each day feeling fulfilled and enriched. Five stars all around for an unforgettable journey through China's rich cultural heritage!

Did three tours with YPT almost back to back in the spring of 2024, and can highly recommend all of them. Very helpful throughout the booking and visa processes, and had great experiences with all guides - from YPT and local partners - and tour groups.

    Iran Revolutionary Tour
Had a great tour to Iran in March. Due to a small group size we did not have a YPT guide with us, only their local partner guide - but we were left in the absolutely hands with Eli! Everything in the tour went smoothly, the itinerary was great and we experienced so many of the different things this country has to offer in just over a week. Eli is extremely knowledgeable about history and culture (she has a background in archaeology), gave us a lot of insight into the Iranian society and daily life and brought us to a lot of great places - some highlights were carpet and tablecloth demonstrations, the Persian gym in Isfahan and a private choir concert in Shiraz.

    Iraqi Kurdistan Newroz Festival Tour
Had an exciting trip to Iraqi Kurdistan with YPT's Morgan Bourven and local guide Dylan. Got to see a lot of the region - cities, countryside and mountains - and even a goat being born! Despite quite a lot of driving and some logistical issues the first days, and being unlucky with very heavy rains and lots of flooding, the guides still made the trip very enjoyable. Dylan (along with his wife Jwana) gave us a lot of insight into the region and Kurdish society, and Morgan made sure everything was running smoothly. The timing was a bit unfortunate this year as Newroz coincided with Ramadan, resulting in a lot of places being closed, but luckily the Newroz celebration itself in Akre made up for it! All in all a very good trip with a fun group and great guides.

    Turkmenistan Easter Tour
The Turkmenistan trip with YPT's Paris Hailwood and local guide Maks was wonderful. Turkmenistan is an extremely fascinating country, and you feel very lucky to be one of the quite few tourists that get to experience it (thanks in no small part to Paris' great help in the visa process). Some highlights of the trip was touring around in the white marble city of Ashgabat, spending the night by the Darvaza gas crater, driving 4x4s through the Karakum desert and taking the night train back to Ashgabat. Maks is very well-informed about Turkmenistan and the different places we visited, in addition to being very funny and just a blast to be around. Paris absolutely made the trip with her wealth of experience with guiding in the region, in-depth knowledge about the country and just overall amazing energy - ensuring both that all the logistics of the tour ran smoothly and that everyone was having fun.

Excellent Great Wall hike. A wild section from jiankou to mutianyu with no crowds and great scenery. Pick up from the hotel and expert guiding from Luis, who spoke very good English and provided much background on the wall and the region. He also paced well an aged me and 2 teens up the first steep section - couldn’t/ wouldn’t have done it without him! Gary was super efficient on the logistics. Overall highly recommended for any visitor wanting to see china slightly off the beaten track.
