This part of the wall is superb but don’t have anything to compare it with. - Tundykee013 contributionsIt was beautiful and even though we haven't been on another part of the wall, I can definitely say this is the most stunning part of the wall. The lake view is priceless and there are a lot of faculties around the wall at this place. Unfortunately the amusement park was closed due to winter and most part of the wall was also closed but at the summer time I am pretty sure it's the best. Especially for people with kids. - Stewarts Vacation472 contributionsOutstanding skilled performance of stunts, dance and acrobatics by men, women and children in colourful costumes. Visually thrilling. The theatre itself was a bit run down and unkempt looking. We had reserved seats, but were told to "sit anywhere". We selected seats near the back and had a great overview. Strict instructions were given about no photography or videoing .. but still people chose to ignore this. However, the show itself was amazing and the acrobatics astounding. - Julia CSingapore, Singapore67 contributionsWe had a great time at Shilingxia Gorge (RMB68, opens 7:30am) and the UFO glass platform (RMB40) during a cool sunny day.
You can take the 2hr bus journey from Beijing or stay at the many simple village accommodations near the Gorge entrance so that you could start your day early to visit Shilinxia, Jindong Karst Caves and Tianyun mountain (with another glass bridge) all in the vincinity.
We decided to trek up along the stream (all paved paths), taking in the beautiful sights along the way. There was a direct stairway route up to the glass platform from the entrance but I imagine it would be quite a torturous climb and missing out a bigger part of the beautiful gorge. We spent about 4 1/2 hours there (leisurely, without cable car).
You can choose to take the cable car up (RMB100 each way). However, it would only bring you about 3/4 way up the mountain and one would still need to climb flights of stairs the rest of the way up.
Getting there by bus:
If you are versed in the Chinese language, you could download the 高德地图 or Baidu map app (Chinese equivalent to Google map, with get clear instructions how to get to your destinations.
From Beijing, go to the Dongzhimen subway station and follow the signs to the "bus transfer hall" (Long-Distance BusHub). Take bus 852 (RMB15) to Pinggu district (1hr15m). Alight at Pinggu Hospital or any stop along this road. Then take either bus 25 or 38 to Shilinxia 石林峡 (RMB5, 40min). The day I went the dragon escalator was working. The cable car and toboggan was not going. It was raining, so that might of been a factor. There is also a place to bungee jump, it was only 260RMB if you are feeling brave. The steps were steep and uneven from a time when it was more important to slow down invaders than to attract tourists. David was very friendly and knowledgeable about the history of each location. Our tours were totally catered to what we wanted to see. I have been on multi-day trips with larger groups, single-day adventures with my family and friends, camping trips that included a lot of hiking with teenage boys, and have even put together my own hiking itinerary with input from James. The experience and scenery in each case has been a real treat and memories my family and I will never forget. Every positive comment I have heard and seen about James is true. We have had great memories and have spent a lot of time talking about and sharing them all. - philippe h1 contributionDom and his team have that great ability to make anything from a hutong tour or visit to the great wall both fun and informative.
