We had a great guide with us from our tour company " china highlights " who was an experienced hiker and knew pretty much everything about the Great Wall .
Go here if you want to avoid crowds, see multiple lengths of the wall largely untouched by Disney-land renovations, as well as the very charming Gubei water town as an added bonus.

The Palace Museum itself is fantastic, a thing of wonder and beauty, but the turret offers an extra dimension, rather in the way that the dome makes St Paul's in London stand out.
Then you get the most magnificent views of the turret across the moat water.

This is my favorite section of the wall since it has some uphill hiking but also some areas that are easier for everyone to enjoy.
The restoration experience was amazing and you felt part of something special knowing that part of your effort has gone in to keeping the wall alive!

Going to see and climb the Great Wall was one of the most important parts of my trip to China and so i had to research where I went.
There was a lot of walking, stairs and uphill climbs before you even get to the wall (even taking the ski lift and toboggan).
