We recently had a chance to visit the Great Wall of China during a recent visit to Beijing. It is a once in a lifetime experience and well worth visiting.

The ride to the wall is beautiful, high in the mountains, with views of the high wall off into the distance. We took the most touristy route. We ascended the wall on a cable car, then walked two towers in each direction - beyond that, the wall is not accessible at this location.

Walking at times is very steep over difficult terrain.

There is a small town at the entrance to the Wall with many shops and restaurants.

    Many tourists, but worth it.

We had a chance to visit the Forbidden City during a recent trip to China. This is a very large area, with monumental buildings. Also, there are many, many local tourists at the site.

Also beware that there is a lot of security. We need to show our passport multiple times to go through the Square and the Forbidden City.

Interesting, but really not much to see.

An important part of history that you can check off your list

A nostalgic place to go to admire the beautiful trees, sacred stones and ancient palace. It's well maintained, very scenic and huge! The grounds were meticulously kept and I could spend all day there just admiring the beauty. The buildings had those ancient glass painted flowers which were delicately painted. And the autumn foliage was just spectacular.

Another just visit in Beijing if you are a history lover. The temple has beautiful architecture, unique and definitely not to be missed. The vast grounds were clean, though there were many people there, they constantly keep it clean.

Beat the crowds with an early AM start.

Caught a taxi direct from Beijing about 1h (260 CNY) and arrived at 06.30am - open time in peak season.

There is a free “blue” shuttle coach bus to take you up to the main entry point - as about 1.5 kms away from parking lot.

We were close to first visitor entry to the wall by 7pm - two options Badaling North (most popular and used by tour bus groups) and Badaling South.

We went south initially and climbed to tower 4 for great views and very limited tourists. There was a limestone stair option at the back of the wall to take you back to the entry point which we used. Very slippery coming back down the wall. Learnt a lot about wall construction on way back down and nice views.

Decided to also climb north section to tower 3 at 8.30am but way way too touristy by this stage.

There are two cable car options both to towers 7 north and south. You can buy a ticket on the wall, if you didn’t pre book. Alot of tourists catching cable cars (large line ups) to the towers by round trips — good option if not able to do steep walking on the wall.

There’s a few eateries and tourist shops at the entry area.

Caught the HSR from nearby Badaling terminal back to Beijing in 25 mins

We counted over 60 tourist coaches on our departure at 9.30am.

All in all great experience but get in early.

Amazing Park in the middle of Beijing.
Entrance fee 10 Yuan. Scenic spot for photos and a nice walk by the lake. Next to Jinghai park.

I only knew of Tiananmen Square because of the iconic video of the protester standing in front of a tank. I'm sure it means a lot more to citizens but I still enjoyed visiting it.

The size is impressive. You can fit a million people in it.

I'd recommend finding a reason to visit by reading about it, then deciding when to go. We went in the evening because it is so much less crowded. Sometimes the wait in the morning can be hours long. However, there is a military flag raising ceremony in the morning so if that floats your boat, you might have to line up.

There's a beautiful and massive flower display and a monument to the peoples heroes in the square.

The widest pedestrian street in china, and the main place to sort all your retail shopping demands. Theres a wide number of international malls with dining options but I thought there was a lack of street vendor outlets compared to other Tier one city pedestrian streets. Still highly recommended

The place was magical! The weather was perfect for our climb. Our tour took us by bus to the car park, we walked to the stairs for the start of the climb.
It is steep, and there are not a lot of landings!
There is irregular distribution of bricks which may be either one layer or two to make the stairs.

What a great way to see the Great Wall without the crowds and in a dramatic location. The cable car only takes you part way through and the remaining climb is steep and not for the feint hearted.
Dramatic photos everywhere and despite the fact that Gubei is recently created it has all the charm of somewhere older. The evening drone show is first class.

This section of the Great Wall is probably the EASIEST I have been so far.
I did Mutianyu just last October, ie about 8 months ago.
There were lots of towers to climb.
Here, I met only 1 and reached the top of the Great Wall for this section.
But this is beautiful as it has the lake with it.

You don't need any tour guide for this.
The tour guides can't help you scale the Great Wall.

What a great place to visit

I booked a ticket to watch Chinese opera and I was really surprised by the size of thos venue. It's huge, modern, very well organized with some great staff working around. Also the security guards inside the venue looked so amazingly weird 😁

This is a very popular and important tourist place for local and overseas tourists. Huge place, only walking is allowed. Getting into is a security check process, lengthy que but efficient. Carry passport if from overseas.
