Anja took a small group out for four hours, and it was a superb experience. I am somewhere between an advanced intermediate and advanced rider, so it is a joy to ride gorgeous, well mannered and well-trained horses in the same places as Karen Blixen did many years ago. Anja and her staff are incredibly kind, the tack is in fine fettle and the scenery is varied and lovely. If you are a beginner, the staff are able to allow more advanced riders to canter while you get your sea legs and move at your own pace. The ride we took allowed us to view the Great Rift Valley, local farms, and share the road with everything from busloads of kids to piki piki motorcycles to goats. The good news is that these horses are largely bomb-proof, given the level of noise that they encounter on the roadway, which is very soothing for those unaccustomed to riding next to busy roads. That, however is brief, and it's not long before you're adventuring to see Kenyan villages, or going for a lively trot or sweet canter. Anja is a journalist, and as a fellow journalist I love her lively intelligence and conversation. If you are staying a while and want to brush up on your eventing skills, Malo is the place, and according to Anja, polo season revs up around her in April and May. I plan to be back around then for the festivities. In all ways, if you are a horse person, or simply want to ride in a world made famous by Out of Africa, this is your stable.
