In October 2023 I travelled to Luxor to volunteer as a Veterinary Nurse with Animal Care in Egypt, this was a unique experience that I will never forget. I spent my days assisting the veterinary team with the continuous flow of outpatients both small and large animals, I saw everything from complex wounds and broken bones to skin allergies, routine work and surgery. All of the treatment at this clinic is provided free of charge to help improve the welfare of the hard working animals in this country. The ACE team were inspiring and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from them and offer my skills as a registered veterinary nurse.
If I could give any volunteers any advice it would be to go for a minimum of 2 weeks, I went for 10 days and it just wasn't long enough! The veterinary team are excellent and also very supportive for any new graduates who want to visit to build confidence. Kim and Helen did a fantastic job of organising my visit and checked in on me every day, they also recommended some great local sites to enjoy in my free time.
The accomodation is very clean and secure, with use of a shared kitchen. Zakia is a wonderful house keeper, she was always available to ask for help and she thoughtfully ensured a selection of cool drinks were available throughout the long hot days.
For visitors this clinic really is one of a kind! If your in the area this spot will really highlight the bravery and resilience of Luxor working animals and give you an interesting insight to the Egyptian culture. Your donations will also help ensure this fantastic charity can carry on providing free veterinary treat to its hardworking locals. Please show your support and pay them a visit.
