The short TL;DR version: if you love and/or are interested in brewing alcohol and/or want to try good Makgeolli and soju, then take this class!
Overview
Location: The class is located in a small shopping alley which is located relatively near (probably a 10 minute walk away) from a subway station.
The class: Joe starts out with a Makgeolli tasting where you get to taste the Makgeolli he brewed vs commercial Makgeolli (spoiler alert: his craft brewed Makgeolli is so much better). He then walks you through a basic history and the method of brewing your own Makgeolli. Then comes the hands on experience of actually making your own Makgeolli, which you get to take back with you 🙂.
Experience: I really enjoyed this class. Joe was very accommodating and opened up a time slot for me since I was in Korea learning Korean for a good portion of my day. He also taught the method very well and provided the whys (which I really appreciated). While there are not many ingredients, technique and feel are super important and he guides you expertly on that. The Makgeolli and soju tasting part opened my eyes to how much better craft Makgeolli and soju is (my alcohol tolerance is super low lol but compared to the mass produced Makgeolli and soju, I didn’t feel bad the day after). He also teaches you how to make your own flavored Makgeolli (e.g. Orange flavored which I tasted that day; specifically we made sweet potato Makgeolli). He provides all of the information after the class in handouts so you’re not stressed about taking notes. He also has various social media channels which you can follow (YouTube, instagram, etc). If you’re in town and have an interest in Korean alcohol, I definitely recommend this course…and also follow him on social media!
