Euphrates is one of the most famous rivers of the world, and some used to believe it flows out of Heaven.

I've seen it in many places: Birecik, Qal'at an-Nagm, Qal'at Ga'bar, Ar-Raqqa, ath-Thawra, Dura Europos, Ar-Rahba, Halabiyya / Zalabiyya, Dayr az-Zawr. It's always impressive, wide and nicely blue, in some parts (Dura, Dayr az-Zawr) with canes on its sides. Rarely though there's much more green on the sides, often if appears to be flowing through barren land.

The waters seem clean, I've bathed in Qal'at an-Nagm and the water was transparent, with many weeds growing in it. I think it's completely fine to bathe there.

The Wadi or Valley of the Barada River entering Damascus is a must see sight!
The old Damascus / Beirut Highway runs for many kilometers along side this famous river. In addition to the river you find the old Hejaz Railroad tracks and the Tora River all run through this famous Wadi. In addition many riverside restaurants are to be found within this long valley.
When we were having breakfast at one of the many restaurants the old Train on the Hejaz tracks passed by making it a very interesting sight!
A drive along the first stretch makes for a very relaxing tour of this famous Barada River Wadi.
Don’t forget your camera on any tour of this very scenic area.

Zar Zar Lake is off the Damascus/Beirut Highway just past the Bludan/Zabadani Exit. By car it is about a 20 to 25 minute drive.
This is a very interesting lake as during the Winter and Spring it increases in size, wherein during the Summer months it shrinks in size as it is not fed by an active river!
Never less, it is always a pleasure looking at this very tranquil lake! Unfortunately now-a-days you can not get next to the lakeside as it has been fenced off for safety concerns.
Many years ago you could rent a small boat and enjoy a lunch on Zar Zar lakes edge.
There are many parking areas to catch a great view of the lake. One that I really prefer is up the Eastern Hill that has a commanding view of the entire lake.
This is a nice place to relax in a serene atmosphere.
