Şile Feneri (Şile Lighthouse) is a historic lighthouse located on the coast of **Şile**, a district in Istanbul, Turkey. Situated on a rugged cliff overlooking the Black Sea, the lighthouse was first built in 1859 during the Ottoman era to guide ships navigating the often-treacherous waters along the northern coast of Turkey. Its primary purpose is to serve as a navigational aid for maritime traffic, especially in the stormy and foggy conditions that are common in the Black Sea.

The lighthouse is notable for its distinctive design, featuring a tall stone tower with a white-and-red color scheme, which stands out against the natural landscape. It is still in operation today, guiding ships safely through the waters and serving as a symbol of Şile’s long maritime history.

In addition to its functional purpose, Şile Feneri has become a popular tourist attraction. The site offers stunning panoramic views of the Black Sea and the surrounding coastline, making it a perfect spot for photography, peaceful walks, or enjoying a scenic sunset. The lighthouse is easily accessible by road from the town of Şile, and nearby cafes and restaurants make it an ideal place to relax while taking in the beautiful sea views.

Whether you're interested in maritime history or simply want to enjoy a serene and picturesque coastal spot, Şile Feneri is a must-visit destination near Istanbul.

The trip to reach this extremity of the European continent is part of the fun. A good way to get away from the hustle and bustle of the huge metropolitan area of Istanbul and enjoy the seashore. The ruins of the Byzantine fortress guarding the entrance of the Bosporus makes it even more interesting. I suggest to dine at the nearby village of Garipce which offers a partial view of the majestic new Bosporus bridge.

Maybe it is not the best you expect from a beautiful lighthouse but I like it, the environment and village is a little weird and it makes me feel I'm walking in a movie or novel, it is fictional. If you can't access private car taking taxi will be very expensive since it is somehow out of Istanbul but there's a bus option from Sarıyer Merkez to Rumeli Feneri.
