We arrived by cruise ship on the last leg of our trip and decided on a 3 hour taxi trip around the city €30 .
The first stop was Gangaramaya Temple . It was a large complex which is the oldest temple in Colombo , an eclectic mix of Thai , Indian as well as Chinese structures. There is an admission cost but it’s only £2 - keep the ticket as you will use it for the temple by the lake .
There is the temple as well as museum- with artefacts from the country’s past . As you would expect numerous Buddha statues - even the smallest in a glass box that you need a magnifying glass to see.
We then visited the temple by lake Beira which was breathtaking and serene. Our only mistake was not to book a guide to explain the various parts of the temple .

We were here on an early Saturday morning. It was quite busy but in a good way. People were walking, exercising and sunbathing as well. Our hotel, Berjaya was right beside the beach and we had an over-bridge to reach the beach from our hotel (there was a train track under the bridge). There were a few restaurants that were literally on the beach itself.

It's a fairly long beach. There were some watersports activities happening. I remember jet skiing. Although, we didn't do any.

During our tuktuk tour, we briefly stopped here to take some pictures. It was quite hot, like 90 degrees when we visited, so just a brief visit here. Will try visit again late in the pm to enjoy its views and ambience.

Nice shops, bars and restaurants are there. But I felt that all are formal rather than live and buzzing happy go lucky atmosphere is missing.

After visiting the Gangaramaya Buddhist Temple, we visited this attraction. There is a statue here infront of an old structure with beautiful mouldings. Some locals were noted chilling out here. Another big white building is in the vicinity, perhaps the Assembly Hall. Took several photos here and enjoyed our visit.

Accross from the above structures is a wide open field where locals are practising their games.

I noted the presence of both the new and old parts of Colombo here: For the old parts, there are the Clock Tower, the Memorial, etc. For the new ones, there are the modern commercial buildings such as the Twin Towers Banks and Government Offices.

I enjoyed my visit here. Highly recommended to visit it!

This was a must visit in Colombo for us. The tours are small and the guides very well informed, some of them having spent time with Mr Bawa before he passed away. It appears as though everything was left in place since that time. This is a charming and eclectic home that gives insight into the mind of Mr Bawa.

Although the tour confirmation suggested we could pay in USD it appeared this was not the case when we arrived - just FYI. We paid in SLR.

A colonial period square with huge open space in the surroundings. Arcade mall on one side, a completely colonial style building with a few high end stores, was almost deserted on a Saturday. There were a few families in the independence square who were jogging, exercising, walking and kids were playing. Do visit if you have time, nothing spectacular !

Beira Lake is a lake in the centre of Colombo. The average depth is 18 feet and it is surrounded by many large businesses in the city

So glad I spared the time to visit this delightful home gallery. It’s a short ride away from central Colombo. I took a tuk-tuk via PickMe app – no fuss, no hassle.

I was warmly welcomed at the door by the artist, Mahen, the inimitable, and his charming wife Rachel. Mahen is cerebral and charismatic. Both he and his wife are extremely laid back and affable, making you instantly feel at home in their home.

You can’t help but be drawn in by the incandescent pieces adorning the walls – the glory of Ganesh in all his resplendent forms. Magical and meaningful to me. The walls literally buzz with energy as the canvasses hum and whirr in harmony with nature.

Mahen and Rachel accompanied me throughout the gallery, taking time to explain the paintings, answering my questions and peppering the conversation with informative snippets to make for an engaging visit.

There was no hard sell, nor sales pitch to entice a buy– quite the opposite really.

Thank you, Mahen and Rachel, for welcoming me into your enchanting home, for taking the time to enable me to meet to Ganesh in his many guises, and for inviting me to your table for the scrumptious lunch. I am looking forward to adorning my wall with the radiant Ganesh who hummed in my ear as loudly as his winged friend thrummed in his.

A real treat to visit this place, whether you buy or not, and meet the Talent behind the captivating canvasses.

Tip to visitors: ring beforehand to ensure timings and a more customized visit.
