Our market tour and cooking school was an amazing experience and one we won’t forget soon! The tour showed us the best of Sri Lankan produce and it was great to try some new ingredients.

The school is very hands-on and takes place in a well-equipped kitchen and dining room. We learned to make a variety of Sri Lankan curries using traditional utensils. Overall, a wonderful experience and one we would fully recommend to anyone visiting Sri Lanka

Dulshan was the perfect host! My family and I all joined Dulshan to prepare and cook a Sri Lankan curry. Dulshan was full of energy and enthusiasm as he told us all about Sri Lanka which gave a wonderful context for the food we were about to prepare. As we prepared and cooked the food, Dulshan was engaging and fun, making everyone feel at ease. The instructions were made easy to follow and Dulshan gave guidance to manage the spice levels for each individual. The food was delicious. Overall, it was a fabulous cookery course. I had such fun! Dulshan was an exceptional host, guide and teacher! I would highly recommend!

I loved the cooking class. The lady who helped me was very friendly and the whole experience was just lovely. We made 10 different curries which were all lovely and I learned the basics of the Sri Lankan kitchen. I can recommend it to everyone.

We partook in the market tour, cooking experience, and meal with Shasikala. Both Shasikala and her mother couldn’t have been more welcoming and eager to share their food traditions and culture with us. The market tour was not rushed, and we had opportunities to purchase some spices and tea to take home as well. The market was very local (we were the only tourists) and a nice manageable size.
Back at the house Shasikala and her mother demonstrated the techniques used to cook several Sri Lankan dishes, some of which were new to us as well. Shasikala was very helpful, and adjusted the menu to suit our preferences without issue. We were thrilled that we got to cook many of the great dishes we had enjoyed during our holiday.
I highly recommend Shasikala’s cooking class to anyone who wants to learn to cook Sri Lankan home style food in an authentic setting from a host who is proud to share her food traditions with visitors.

Hi, I had an amazing time with Piumi at her place.
She instructed me on how to cook authentic Sri Lankan food, she let me cook and followed step by step. We made a 6-meal course over 3 hrs but honestly I think we did even more! Such an interesting cruising, a mix of flavours and spices combined. Atmosphere was very friendly and genuine. Her parents (and dog!) were very interested too, so I guess I did everything properly!!

Try and enjoy your own creations, dive into the Sri Lankan cuisine.

This cooking class with the rustic tour guide was my birthday gift from my husband as he knows that I love different cooking experiences. It was one amazing experience with fun and knowledge. We visited Colombo’s biggest vegetable market as the first part of our tour to pick our own veggies. And that is the biggest market ever I have visited. Chef, Nim was a cool character with a great sense of humour and he did a great job in giving us the best experience. We cooked 3 curries with rice which turned out to be the most delicious local food we tasted. Nim, gave us some simple tips and techniques that we can follow when making Sri Lankan food at home. I would say this is the best birthday gift I got in years.

Ash, to be sure, knows his cocktail mixing inside and out, but that you can experience any Friday night at Uncles. No, what you get for your buck here is his time, attention and genuinely infectious company.

As he regales you with the history of cocktail mixing, a tale of the man who invented ice (yes, really) or simply a little peak behind the curtain into his own life, there's genuinely not a dull moment. And through this he weaves in the actual lessons on the building blocks of cocktail mixing, which by night's end good luck remembering!

But what you certainly won't forget is the experience as a whole, one you'd be smart to put aside an evening for, to let loose and learn something while you're at it.

I took Duneesha's cooking class the day I was leaving Sri Lanka. The flight was after midnight, so I asked her to have a class for dinner. Duneesha and I contacted using WhatApp and the communication was really smooth. She accommodates your plan and preferences very flexibly. She asked my preference in menu (which she has so many options to choose from) and I could ask some specific dishes I wanted to learn for substitutes. Duneesha knows the best combinations and very knowledgeable, so seek her recommendation and suggestions. She is super flexible so if you want to substitute some dishes, you can, but ask her whether that goes with the rest of the dishes, if you want to learn how to make an authentic Sri Lankan plate at the end. The idea is you want to have some spicy, some mild, some wet, some dry, and the final plate should look colourful! We had many back and forth to decide the final menu, so I knew even before the class that she is serious about the food!

It took about 1 hour and 20 minutes from Colombo city center to get her place by car because of Friday evening traffic. So plan to leave your place early, especially if it is during rush hour. The class starts with her lecture on Sri Lankan everyday food. Then we go to the kitchen and start cooking. You can have as much hands-on experience as you want if you like. I was too busy taking pictures and writing notes but was still able to do some preparation, mixing, cooking, etc. Duneesha's very nice mom was also in the kitchen with us, helping out at every part of the making of the meal.

I learned how to make string hoppers, coconut roti, dhal curry, coconut sambol, lunumiris, egg plant mojo, spicy egg curry, ambultiyal (a dry fish dish) and potato curry. Even if you may not reproduce what you learnt in Dunee's kitchen in your home country, you would learn so much; the ingredients of certain dish, how it is cooked, about its spices, what to combine and how to eat, etc., so when you eat in Sri Lanka, you appreciate the food much more and understand why it takes time for food to arrive in restaurants when they cook it fresh.

You can order food in much more sensible way. You will understand how Sri Lankan curry is different from Indian curry. That course was 60 Euro. The basic course is 50 Euro and you can add extra dish if you like.

My husband came along but he did not take a class. At the end we ate togetherr with Duneesha and her nice husband, Stephan. We had a great time and learned so much about Sri Lanka's food. Duneesha will teach you how to put different food items in one plate (which is very useful knowledge at any buffet situation in Sri Lanka), and how exactly to eat the food by hand. I never realised that the food tastes so different if you mix well with your finger sand then eat. The food then is not as spicy as you eat individually, and results in some noticeably different flavours when combined this way.

I was the first student since the pandemic, and I am so grateful that she offered a course. Many cooking class requires at least two people, but Duneesha allows one participant. Most of cooking class has a set time, but Duneesha is flexible. All and all, I highly recommend to take her class if you have time in Colombo. You will not see Sri Lankan food the same way again!

We scheduled an afternoon cooking class with Mohara and the experience did not disappoint. Her home is a wonderful setting to enjoy delightful, hands-on instructions on cooking the many specialties Sri Lanka has to offer. Mohara is a patient and enjoyable host, teacher, and chef. She is extremely talented and is very open to sharing her skills. If you have the opportunity to be in Sri Lanka, spend time with Mohara. We are so glad we did!!
