- Ingeborg56Oslo, Norway2,403 contributionsIt is very similar to other monestaries we have visited in other countries, and one has to buy tickets to enter the monestary if you are not a buddhist. The buddha statue is really nice.Written July 3, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- chaletariaLondon, United Kingdom558 contributionsA beautiful monastery in a beautiful location. This monastery, founded in 1648 by a 14 year old Zanabazar, who brought Tibetan Buddhism to Mongolia, is set in the forested hills some 40km from the ancient city of Karakoram (near modern Kharkhorin). There is a road that will take you about halfway there, then you need to access the site by horse (recommended) or foot. There is no information at the site, so read up about it first. The topmost areas (moderately easy to access but unlikely to be disabled friendly) are limited to men only. Photos of the exterior only as it is still an active religious site. Probably the earliest Buddhist monastery in Mongolia.Written August 5, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - klaabukasElva, Estonia60 contributionshundreds of paintings on the sharp rocks, dating back to bronze age. some are very simple, some more detailed. Take an hour or two and discover them. You can climb up very close to some. Absolutely magnificent!Written July 12, 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - TheMrWobblyEast Sussex, UK76 contributionsThe site itself is small though it is no doubt very important as it was quite busy on the Sunday that we went. Though people came and went going inside felt as if I had walked into somebody's house by mistake and they weren't happy about it.
If you go take a guide who might be more welcome than you on your own. Even with a guide this is no more than a 10 minute stop I would suggest.Written October 3, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
