This was rated as one of the top things to do when in Yerevan on TripAdvisor so we went along. It’s a lovely old fashioned style outdoor market with long rows of stalls stretching the length of the street. You can find a lot of traditional crafts such as pottery, timber crafts, homemade linens along with jewelry and souvenir’s. You will have no issue spending an hour browsing all the stalls. There are also a few small restaurants if you need some refreshments while you’re there.

It's a very nice park with lots of rides, sleepily for younger children. The little pond is also nice to have a walk around.

Visiting the Matenadaran (The Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts) in Yerevan with family is an enriching experience, providing insight into Armenia’s profound literary and cultural heritage.

    Arrival and First Impressions
The building itself is impressive, with a grand facade and statues of scholars, including Mesrop Mashtots, the creator of the Armenian alphabet. This initial sight alone is engaging and sets the tone for a place steeped in history. Even for younger family members, the statues and the scale of the building are captivating.

    Exhibits and Highlights
Inside, Matenadaran houses thousands of ancient manuscripts, not only in Armenian but also in Greek, Latin, Persian, and more. Highlights include illuminated manuscripts with vibrant colors and intricate details. Each exhibit tells a story of Armenia’s resilience, as many of these manuscripts were saved from invasions and natural disasters.

Ancient Manuscripts and Maps: The manuscripts offer a glimpse into different aspects of Armenian culture, from religion and science to art and medicine. Family members of all ages find it fascinating to see how these historical records were preserved.

Interactive Displays: Matenadaran has modern, interactive displays that help explain the context and significance of each manuscript, which makes it easier for younger visitors to grasp the importance of what they’re seeing.

Guided Tours: Opting for a guided tour brings the exhibits to life with stories of how manuscripts were created, copied, and saved over the centuries. The guides are knowledgeable and often provide anecdotes that make the experience even more engaging for families.

    Learning Opportunities
Matenadaran is not just about viewing old manuscripts; it’s about understanding Armenia’s dedication to preserving knowledge. Kids and adults alike can learn about the Armenian alphabet, which is unique to the country, and see how language and literature helped Armenians maintain their identity through challenging times.

    Tips for Families
Engage Younger Visitors: Although the exhibits are sophisticated, guides often tailor explanations to suit younger audiences, making the experience more accessible.

Photography Rules: Photography is restricted in some areas, so it’s best to check with the staff beforehand.

Timing: To fully appreciate Matenadaran, plan for at least 1-2 hours. This allows enough time to view the main manuscripts and absorb the details without feeling rushed.

    Overall Impression
Matenadaran is a meaningful family destination, allowing everyone to connect with Armenia’s cultural legacy. The combination of ancient manuscripts, impressive architecture, and historical significance leaves a lasting impression. For families interested in history and learning, Matenadaran is a memorable experience that adds depth to a trip to Armenia.

This is the memorial with the eternal flame right next to the Armenian Genocide Museum. Once you visit the memorial, spend time, may need at least three hours, to visit the Genocide Museum which is free and a MUST visit.

Thanks a lot Lia for the amazing tour, professional presentation, friendliness. We got the "Standard package" and really enjoyed it. Tasted 2 brandies at the end of the tour. Even the tasting process was very professional, informative!

Just book an appointment from the website for being able to join the appropriate tour/language and to make sure you have a reserved place.

Highly recommend the Museum, even if you are not a brandy person!

Fountains kick off at 8pm, and last for around 10 minutes. Head to a rooftop terrace to enjoy the show with a glass of wine.
