Hanoi Old Quarter is quite an interesting area. There are about 39 streets that make up this quarter. They are narrow, full of small shops and restaurants and full of life! This may not be everyone's favourite destination but many people choose to visit. We enjoyed our visit but were apprehensive with the street food on offer and the busy traffic on the roads. Cars and bikes everywhere and no footpaths to walk on. A nice place full of history with lovely people everywhere.

The grounds are pretty so it's worth a quick walk through but don't bother with the audio guide. I got bored and stopped using it after about 10 minutes. If you are short on time, I wouldn't say it is a must see.

It's a tranquil oasis in the heart of Hanoi and right located in the old Quarter. Most people gather here so it's very crowded most of the time. Our hotel is just near here and we spent early morning time walking around the lake. Very peaceful.

    Such an interesting visit!
This museum experience was one of my favorite ever. Both outside and the two main indoor buildings are very interesting and all presented very clearly. Highly recommended if you're interested in learning more about Vietnamese culture and ethnic origins
    Cost: 40000 VND (about $1.50 U.S.) Hours: Closed Monday. Tuesday-Sunday 8:30-5:30.

I visted the Hoa Lo Prison. First, the good. I learned so much about the French occupation and the following repression of the Vietnamese Rebles. Now the bad. The American Vietnam War section was not balanced. I would say the museum did not address the harsh treatment of American POWs, but nor did I expect it to shine a light on that dark history.

I enjoyed the museum which was informative and revealing. Gave me somesurprising insights into women's lives in Vietnam over the years.
Three levels - 1st regarding marriage, children and mother. 2nd was about women in war including militia, guerillas, those in jail and protest. 3rd on different cultural dress.

First off, the tomb is within a large complex so there is more to see than just the body of Uncle Ho. And the surrounding area with the Palace, Gardens, Ho House, Pagoda etc is great for a visit.
I titled this visit strange as it is a weird experience for a tourist. Ho Chi Minh is revered by all of Vietnam so a serious and solemn event to be in this place. As a Western tourist his reputation is not so golden so he didn't have that aura for me. I also am not convinced it is his body preserved that you see. He looks remarkably young considering when he died and even with the body being removed for a few months to Russia for 'maintenance'. It could actually be a Lenin looky-likey in there...
Glad I can say I was there but the security guards are very strict and too much for me.
Note that the complex had many gift shops but they basically all just sell Vietnamese flag t-shirts or plates with Ho's face painted on. Which was a bit of a let down.

Please get the Signature Gold massage! This was the best massage I have ever had! So worth the price! My therapist Hannah was amazing! Her hands are magic. Liam was helpful when I first inquired early afternoon and was able to book a massage later that evening. He was the one that suggested I do the Signature Gold massage. Sarah was wonderful! She was very informative and friendly. Best 90 minute massage of my life! I plan to go back. The place itself looks so beautiful and relaxing! Even nice than the hotel I was staying at! I went back again on my last night. I will try to go back next time I come to Hanoi!

Many of the museums in Indochina are on the same theme and focus on sculptures - both independent pieces and ones that were found from temple remains. Many of these are of animals and Buddha gods.
However, being an art museum this one was a bit different and many of the paintings on show are fabulous. I particularly enjoyed the lacquer ones and seeing the work that had gone in to the fine detail.
Be aware though that in one aspect this museum is atypical of Vietnam and Cambodia in that there is a war undertone. As I went through the rooms I found more and more pieces to have soldiers included or were 'fighting' sculptures.
Has an amazing Museum Shop though. If you are an avid souvenir hunter like me you need to visit!!!

We were so happy we asked Dao from Vietnam Moon Travel to put a package of 17 days together for us. From the minute we arrived in HCM we were treated like royalty. The hotels she picked for us were stunning, as were the tours, pickups, lunches , dinners. We got a message every evening telling us about the next days adventure. We chose a 5 star tour and were not disappointed. Dao, you are the tour Princess of Vietnam, thank you so much.

We only had a fleeting look of the Opera House, as we were short of time. It is a lovely building, built by the French in the early 1900s. It bears some resemblance to the Opéra Palais Garnier. It would be great to visit inside!

What sets the gallery apart is not just its impressive collection, but also the passion and knowledge of the owner. They are always ready to share the history and significance of each item, making your visit not just a shopping experience, but a fascinating journey through time. Their love for the items they curate is evident in the meticulous care and attention they give to maintaining the authenticity and beauty of each piece.

The ancient pagoda is located in such a beautiful island off the edge of West lake in modern Hanoi. Since it is little away from the old quarters, it is advisable to start your day visit with this pagoda. The place is surrounded by very well managed walk-way amidst the busy main road of the city.
The pagoda opens at 7 - 7.30 in the morning till evening.

As we walked around the HCM complex, it appeared that the major attraction is the HCm Mausoleum. This attraction is one of the several attractions located in the vicinity. My guide pointed it to me and learned that it is not open to the public.

Since there are other open attractions to visit in the area such as the Museum, Pagoda, the wide open space, etc. we proceeded to visit them.
