The museum is a bit out the way and can only really be reached by taxi or motorbike from the Old Quarter. We initially attempted to walk, but it’s not a nice route for walkers.

The museum itself is split into three main sections. The largest is devoted to the Vietnamese ethic groups. There is an outdoor section that showcases the various architectural styles of the ethnic groups and the a final section which covers ethnic groups from other parts of south east Asia. All three sections are spacious and informative, although the general format reminds me of older style museums with a very familiar and formulated structure. I feel some of the exhibits deserve more flair and creativity in how they are displayed because the clothing and artifices are themselves exquisite.

Overall, I enjoyed our morning at the museum but I prefer the women’s museum a little more.

The Hoa Lo prison was an eye opener for the treatment of criminals and political prisoners during the French colonisation of Vietnam . This is an era of which I knew very little, except that France was going to great lengths to suppress a population deserving of independence. It’s not an uncommon story of western colonisation/suppression in general. The museum is well done - I highly recommend the audio guide; a bargain at 100 dong; and if the topic interests you, you’ll find the audio compelling, especially the inmates stories. The ‘comradeship’ is pretty central to each display. It’s ironic when you consider how horrendous the French treatment of the Vietnamese was that they should ignore the true conditions in which American POWs were held. Make no mistake, the US involvement in the Vietnam War was a dark chapter in its history and the destruction it ‘rained’ down upon the Vietnamese people in chemicals and weaponry was horrific. But to suggest POWs were treated humanely with respect, allowing them to mingle together and enjoy holiday dinners isn’t even close to accurate. It’s a shame as this inaccuracy undermines the truth of all the stories. Still, it’s well worth a visit.

I really enjoyed this. It was fascinating to learn the contribution of Vietnamese women through the ages and how highly they are valued. The museum was well laid out in sections, ie. family life, fashion, etc and was clean and cool. It was not busy when we went which was excellent as we could take our time.

Wonderful service! I had the serene hot stone essential oils massage 90 min. I was just the thing to relax all the muscles from all the walking.

Beautiful interior. High ceiling and one may be surprised to find a lovely cathedral in communist North Vietnam! Exterior unattractive with its concrete facade,

This was the meeting point for our day tour to halong bay. Was there early to take some pictures. It was located near to a very busy roundabout. Can see that the building had a lot of history. There was a cafe located right at the side of the opera house as well where we got some breakfast and coffee. I thought the building was more pretty at night with the lightings.

Incredible location! A wonderful collection of antiques and you are offered a free tour when you arrive. You also have the opportunity to purchase the items, which are very reasonably priced!

We loved visiting Green Palm gallery. It is in a great location and has some truly incredible pieces. We came specifically to see some pieces by our favorite Vietnamese artist Hong Viet Dung, and were so happy to discover some other amazing pieces and artists. If you’re hoping to see some great art, this is the best place in Hanoi!!

We stopped in here while wandering around the old quarter day. Its similar to many of the ancient houses in Hoi An, but worth stopping in if you are in the area. Always interesting to see these old houses.

Think we have overdosed on puppet theatres, that said I think the Lotus theatre was slightly better. The traditional stories were the same as we've seen before, but the puppets seemed slightly larger and more dramatic. A screen either side of the stage summarised each story, which is useful for the tourist. Again the show lasts less than one hour, but nevertheless enjoyable - especially as we don't have anything like this back home. We bought our tickets from the box office the day before to avoid any confusion with online ticketing, as some people appeared to struggle getting in with e-tickets.
