What travelers are saying
- AddisadvisorTitchfield, UK8,363 contributionsI write this as someone who lives in Shola area. It was Addis Eats/Goaddis tours who started taking folk to Shola M. Very good idea.
1. Far less hassle for tourists OR foreign residents... than in Mekarto.
2. Less traffic jams on the way in, in fact none.
3. Smaller and for a tourist more genuine view of the main market for the eastern suburbs..
4. Lovely people BUT do ask before taking pictures.Written March 21, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - ckiarie2002keNairobi, Kenya266 contributionsGood road side open air market for purchase of local Ethiopia dresses and men’s shirts too for souvenirs.Written January 19, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.

- Martin ZSwitzerland2,088 contributionsThis location is under the covered walkway of the Ethiopian National Theatre and about a hundred meter away from the National Café & Restaurant. The Gallery does not provide for a permanent exhibition, it is rather a place, which can be rented by groups and/or entities for a period of time, say, weeks or months. When I went there, I was lucky to meet the architecture students of the ‘Unity University’, who opened for their annual ‘Architectural Exhibition’ from 18-21 October 2018. The ‘Unity University’ is the first privately owned institute of higher learning to be awarded full-fledged university status in Ethiopia by the Ministry of Education founded 1991 by Dr. Fisseha Eshetu. It is also the first private university in the country to offer postgraduate programs leading to master’s degree in business administration (MBA) and development economics. The architecture students from 1st-5th grade have displayed several of their project designs, both individual building complex' and urban planning designs, as well as drawings and paintings. Two [2] of the young students who were present, in this case two female students, have masterfully explained their project designs and their thinking behind, very impressive indeed. There is hope that some of these students make their professional journey to become mindful professionals, e.g. to assist the authorities in an improved Addis Ababa City Urban planning and upgrade of the great number of ongoing seemingly haphazard building and infrastructure design and construction.
However, visitors may get information from the respective sources to find out in advance about specific events and/or exhibitions within the premises of the 'National Art Gallery'.Written October 23, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - TGReviewsBristol, UK4 contributionsI love going to Asni's for good simple food and best tea! - MzungubabeNairobi, Kenya616 contributionsI had never heard of this gallery before, but a friend asked me to go to an exhibition there with her. Friendly curators so I signed up to their mailing list. Apparently they have a branch in London, UK too!Written March 7, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.

There is no set fee, a man with a receipt book decides what you will pay by sizing you up. In our case 100ETB per adult (nothing for kids). While ticket man was lovely, an aggressive young man with good English insisted a guide would be 200 ETB. We knew from Ethiopian colleagues this was not the case and after some to-and-fro he agreed, though not in the usual good-natured Ethiopian way but in a sullen and quite threatening manner.
We enjoyed the visit, the Marabou Storks are amazing and our young son was thrilled to find an enormous wing-feather on the ground. The views as the boats puddled around was lovely. It was a nice way to pass an hour and a short walk from our hotel (Lewi Resort) was pretty. A good way to pass a morning.Written February 11, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - Haytham Abu FirasDoha, Qatar13,694 contributionsVisited the downtown or Bahir Dar Market with our guide. Here you can find anything. Clean your shoes, eat grilled fish, buy furniture, enjoy a cup of coffee or exchange money. We had a short visit but I think you need a guide for translation as well as bargain. We stopped at a beautiful mosque for pray. - moconaMassachusetts142 contributionsThe owner, Tegegne is both an exceptionally nice man and extremely talented artist. he beautifully captures scenes of Lalibela and rural Ethiopia. He is very helpful, his prices very reasonable and there is no pressure to buy. - Robert SWestbury, NY797 contributionsIf there is one thing that I am not, it is being a shopper so I cannot inform anybody about the quality and value of the merchandice. I can say that the colorful display of baskets (in particular) was striking and the market is worth a visit.Written March 15, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
