Having read how challenging it can be to attend a football match in Morocco, we were nervous about doing so.
The game we attended, Kawkab Marrakech v Wydad Fes, was a lower 2nd division game (Botola 2) and although we could not find anyone willing to act as our guide (one warned us not to go because it was unsafe!), we had a pretty good experience overall.
Getting in is a challenge, because the ticket boxes are tiny and inconspicuous, and local kids hassle you to buy them a ticket. And you may not get by in English - luckily we speak enough French.
Although there was no hint of trouble, the police and army presence was massive - they looked like they were expecting World War 3! The stadium is modern and impressive, but way out of the city, and because police blocked the roads for over 30 minutes afterwards, getting back to the centre was a long process. Frustrating, given that only about 3,000 people were present at the match.
Tickets for the VIP section were reasonable at 100 dirhams (c.£8.50), and the seats were comfortable, cinema-style. But don't expect any souvenirs, nor catering!
We were also warned that the standard of play would not be good, but it was decent, and Marrakech won 2-1, so the locals went home happy. Goals are not plentiful in this division, so we were lucky.
We were a bit concerned to be shadowed by a policeman on our way back to our taxi pick-up - but it seems that was for our own safety. I suspect that you can have worse football experiences in Morocco than we did.
