Adam was an experienced and knowledgeable guide. His passion for the trip was palpable! Always prodding us to ask any questions and share his knowledge. A once in a lifetime opportunity- well worth the money!

Shoyo was a great guide. He gave us a lot of information about the island on the way up. He took a lot of photos and dropped them to us before the end of the tour. Stargazing was great, especially with the super laser pointer to guide the viewing. It was awesome to see the mountain and surrounding skies in the daylight, at sunset and at night.

This was an amazing experience! Their luau space is absolutely gorgeous and all of their staff was incredible. There were lots of options for the food but it was not warm thus, not super great. Other than that, it was a great time and would do it again.

So much fun! Guides were so thoughtful and careful that everyone was okay. I’m not a big ATV enthusiast but they were patient with me and the rest of our group was great. A very nice way to enjoy the terrain of the Big Island!

Interesting to see the reviews here. I think some are thrown off by James' laid back style, which I totally get. This isn't a professional presentation or rigid tour. If you understand that going in, you get the full value out of what this is.

James knows the best spot to go that night in those conditions to give you the best view of the stars. That's invaluable. He provides jackets and chairs so everyone is comfortable. He then helps you get the most out of your stargazing experience, showing you various stars, taking photos (and even helping you take photos of your own) so you can see way more detail than is possible with the naked eye, and teaching you more about what you're seeing. He then takes a few photos of your party with the stars as your backdrop, a shot that would be nearly impossible to take yourself. Oh, and a bonus, he's super patient, which we experienced as he was dealing with a very demanding and frustrating group of attendees...I'd imagine this quality would be great to help make sure your little ones have a good time.

My wife, brother-in-law and I took this tour. Had a wonderful tour with driver/guide Edan. He was friendly and very knowledgeable, particularly when showing the constellations with a laser pointer when we got back down to the visitors center after viewing the beautiful sunset at Mauna Kea”s summit. Bring some warm clothes … a light down or fiberfill jacket, hat and gloves will come in handy … it was in the 30’s F on top and we were fortunate there was hardly any wind. There’s a 45 minute stop at the Visitors Center at 9,000 ft on the way up to help acclimatize to the high altitude of the summit. There’s a gift shop there where you can buy some keepsake souvenirs. I sat up front in the van for great photo opportunities of the road and otherworldly scenery as we climbed up the flanks of the giant inactive volcano (the world’s tallest mountain if measured from its base 20,000 ft below sea level on the ocean floor to its summit at 13,766 ft above sea level). The trip to the top was a nostalgic return for this 64 year old. 34 years had passed since I bicycled to the top in 1989 (climbbybike.com rates Hilo to Mauna Kea as the hardest bicycle climb in the world). There are a lot more astronomical observatories on the summit now. The tour is worth the cost and you can relax and leave the driving in the capable hands of the Arnott’s Adventure personnel. Their vans and drivers can deal effectively with the road to the top and the trip back down. Only 4X4 vehicles are allowed beyond the Visitors Center for a good reason. The road becomes rough gravel with plenty of washboard and dust, plus the descent can be challenging to a vehicle’s brakes. Rental car companies companies rule out letting you drive their rental cars up this behemoth of the Big Island. I’m sure some folks renting a 4X4 can, but then you won’t get all the information provided by a guide about this really extraordinary place … Edan mentioned that NASA tested their Mars Rover on Mauna Kea because some areas on it are a close approximation of the Red Planet’s surface. It also has the best star gazing (forget the red carpet at the Academy Awards) of any place in the world, hence all the observatories on top. Enjoy an experience you’ll never forget and take this tour. Highly recommended.

Amazing day! We had a really good guide. He was extremely kind and knowledgeable. The hike was beautiful and the waterfalls were spectacular. Highly recommend swimming even if it’s chilly! The lunch was refreshing and nourishing. Definitely recommend this excursion.

The show was listed as 5-8 and ended at 7:30. It was a lot of money and I don’t know why they listed for the time they did and ended 1/2 early

The hike was a great moderate experience, maybe not for a total beginner, but I'm not a frequent hiker and was able to keep up just fine. The guide was really great and we truly loved the mix of history and mythology that he gave us throughout the day.

Great day with wonderful guide Guenevere. Picked up on time. Hike through lava tube. Lots of time in Volcanoes National Park. Lunch and dinner that were provided were good. Tour involved a lot of driving and we were glad that we didn’t have to do the driving. We were fortunate to see eruption at Mount Kilauea during the day and evening. This tour was one of the highlights from our time on the Big Island. Another shout out to Guenevere..our guide extraordinaire!

A terrific outing for my adult-aged family of 5! The ATV ride itself is fun and mostly quite picturesque, though not spectacular in my opinion. What makes the trip is the midpoint stop where we were able to take a refreshing swim in the natural pool below a waterfall. Going from the hot ATV ride into the cool pool was just perfect and super fun to hang out at there for 15-20 minutes. Staff were all friendly and helpful, including Erin and Austin who served as our guides. Don't miss the easy drive-around to view the grounds after your excursion. It takes only minutes...lovely gardens and there's another beautiful waterfall viewing spot that's great for photos. This appeared to be a well-run operation overall, and they are in the process of making several improvements to their facility that will make the experience even better. Suggest to make reservations over the phone instead of using the website - easier to discuss options/times with a live person...and you might save a few bucks.

Take this tour: real HOT steaming fissures, the smell of sulphur, real recent lava flows, real accounts from live actual residents about the 2018 volcano eruption and their personal photos! This is THE tour to feel the true power and devastation of a volcano and how it impacts peoples’ lives!

We had no idea this tour existed until, by chance, New Way Horizon Travel offered a free shuttle to the Hilo Farmer’s Market from the cruise ship port to the farmers’ market and I asked about the 2018 eruption event - we are sooo glad we did! This is no doubt the real volcano experience people want but never knew still exists.

A few other big kudos: 1. Price-wise the tour is on par with other half day excursions BUT a significant portion of the $ goes towards the residences devastated by the eruption to help rebuild and recover. 2. Our tour guide, Brent, was in a word AWESOME - he was the same person who shuttled us from the ship, simply informed without the hard sell, even went out of his way and provided a lift to and from a local restaurant back to the ship after the tour (since the tour spanned lunchtime) - first class all the way!

I’m sort of annoyed that our cruise company had NO information on this tour nor had anything close to equivalent. This NEEDS to be on anyone’s itinerary who wants to experience true, live volcanic activity and not just some dry narrative and grainy pictures about stuff that happened decades ago.

Obviously this type of tour is hard to scale so, should this review result in a massive amount of interest, my apologies but, given the important stories that need to be told, that’s a good problem to have :).

Andre and Shelley bring a very personalized approach to teaching us how to motorcycle in the rugged volcanic terrain on the Big Island. Both my wife and I were beginners. Andre and Shelley took the time to get us up to speed. We definitely enjoyed the back trails of Hawaii off the beaten path. Very affordable for the two hour trip we did. They have very high business ethics. Very highly recommend
