I would also recommend a homestay as that really made us converse in Spanish and we grew very close to our host family in Pana (Magda and her family are incredible).
We took advantage of the weekly programs offered including a cooking class, vising an elementary school that is supported by Gregorio and Candelaria (which included riding in the back of a pick up truck through ha...

We went in with low expectations but were pleasantly surprised by the well maintained walking tracks, the abundance of wildlife around (including lots of spider monkeys) and the butterfly house.

And there's plenty to see here: a small museum, the ruins of temples, plazas, and ball courts, as well as an area used by modern-day indigenous people for sacred rites.
Iximche is also easily accessible from Antigua/Guatemala City/Quetzaltenango, so if you're only visiting this area, you should definitely take a day trip to visit this site!

If you stay at Casa Colonial you can get a SUP free inflatable tour, which would be great on a calm morning but a EPS board would be perfect.

GR Travel was very responsive and quoted me very reasonable prices for private transportation (6 people) from Guatemala City to Lake Atitlan, Lake Atitlan to Antigua, and Antigua to the airport.
Gustavo runs a great transportation company here in Pana-friendly staff-on time-reasonably priced-vehicles are safe and well maintained-plus Gustavo is a nice guy-will use from now on

Our tours included: A Local Experience (making lunch and tortillas with a local family), San Juan Village Tour, Santiago Village Tour and Pico de Cielo Hike with Solola Market tour.
Aside from that, the setting of the tour was absolutely gorgeous and led us through towns off the beaten path all the way to Pico del Cielo and its incomparable view of Lake Atitlán and surrounding volcanoes.

He kept an eye out for boats, took pictures for us from afar, and even took us to an amazing cove where we climbed some rocks to do some cliff diving.
He took a lot of beautiful photos of us in the middle of the lake and we'll probably use some of them in the thank you card for our wedding, as this was part of our honeymoon.

Thanks to Claudia and the wonderful staff for showing us how to make an amazing meal and making this experience so pleasant and fun! Truly a worthwhile experience!
