Don Olivo Chocolate Tour

They gave us samples of a variety of fruits, taught us about Costa Rican agriculture, taught us how to squeeze and drink sugar cane (delicious), and finally how to grow, roast, grind and enjoy the finest chocolate.
We enjoyed an entertaining afternoon getting an education about the fruit trees, including tasting the fruits of these trees, Learned the history of chocolate and how the industry has evolved.

On the jungle night walk we saw frogs, scorpions, porcupines, sleeping toucans, kinkajou, baby and mama sloth!! Easy walking for most any age, the coffee and chocolate were awesome.

This class was amazing and we will definitely use the recipes we learned again at home! Chef Scott and his staff are very knowledgeable, friendly, and made sure we had a very relaxing, fun and memorable evening.
From the freshly caught red snapper, which was grilled to perfection, to the gallo pinto, the patacones, platanos fritos and ceviche with shrimp, mahi mahi and tuna every meal was delcious and wonderfully presented.

... in a very insightful and hands-on way, Geinar was also very enthusiastic and passionate about the wildlife within the cocoa plantation, and was great at answering questions and helping us take pictures up close.
He gave us a fascinating tour around the plantation - highlighting local wildlife and how cacoa beans grow, and then we got down to making the chocolate, which was insightful, entertaining and very hands on.

She showed us many places that we would have missed otherwise, got ice cream samples for everyone and even included a stop at a local coffee shop to reenergise and use the restrooms (the coffee was incredible!).

This was a last minute great experiance we ended up having a private tour and ended having a blast learned alot about cocoa and aboit diffrent frogs the guide was an amzing photographer and took amazing photos up...
She really created a memorable time for us from tasting cacao fruit, to creating our own chocolate bars and being involved in the whole creating Coffee from fruit to brew experience.

The drive up to the tour was fabulous, beautiful countryside and a short trip to the nearest town for lunch brought us $2 smoothies and live music and dancing in the park! Do this tour!
Dennis is the best Coffee tour guide - he was fantastic.We enjoyed this tour and learned so much about the how painstaking, organic coffee is to grow.
Great buzz and food, excellent selection of beers and great cocktails too!! Definitely a MUST if you are in San Jose, it will change your perception of this city forever.
From the wonderful tamales to the fresh coconut and the delicious ice cream, it was beyond what I had hoped for and easily one of the best experiences I've had in Costa Rica.

We were pleasantly surprised also to discover the tour includes information on chocolate and sugar cane production and processing and we enjoyed the samples of both as well.
The tour guide was excellent and the tour moves at a good pace, while still giving solid information about coffee, chocolate, and sugar cane.
We will definitely be going back when in Liberia and we are anxiously anticipating to see their beers in the US! ¡Pura Vida!

If you have the option to enjoy a lunch I would highly recommend it - the staff create delicious meals (and the ginger tea is wonderful).
The chocolate tour is worth the entire trip, but the food at the restaurant was also amazing (I'm a vegetarian, and the cabbage leaves stuffed with mango were UN believable!) Luckily I stayed for 7 days.
Adriana is amazing, she is very knowledgeable about the culture and history, she does an awesome job at translating, and the restaurants and coffee shop we visited where great.
It was a very educational walk through the neighborhoods where we learned some history and other interesting information, and then we were treated to several eclectic gourmet type meals that were SO delicious.

It’s near fantastic vegan food too, Grab a Buddha bowl or açaí bowl with fresh fruit and granola while you’re out there.
Speaking of which, the Grand Paradise Bar and restaurant down by the beach, is a great place for a drink, or some delicious Caribbean food - especially the chicken fajitas.
Stopped in on our way into San Jose before our flight the following morning and was impressed by the friendly service, good food, and excellent variety and quality of the craft beer.
If you are in Ciudad Colon, this is a great stop!

... made, a hot chocolate drink, chocolate cookies, a free small chocolate bar, lots of chocolate to try throughout, and you get to create your own chocolate by choosing the % of cocoa, milk, cocoa butter, and sugar.
Our guide Carlin was very knowledgeable and friendly, showing us dozens of flowers, spices and native medicinal plants along with monkeys and a sloth in the trees.
Some surprises, especially how Chinese families took over the plantations in the late 19th century and how fruit produced (mainly bananas) competed with chocolate in same region.
Finca Cristina is a family-run organic coffee farm offering daily tours from 14:00 - 16:30, taking you round the production process from growing, through harvesting, milling and roasting.
Also we enjoyed the warm and friendly atmosphere at Cafe Cristina and are looking forward to tasting the fresh coffee we bought at home.
Dina (beach location) had great suggestions and was so so sweet, and Erick (brewery) was so accomodating and super fun to chat with!! Food at the beach location was great and was the perfect place to watch the sun...
We stayed at the occidental for 7 days every night we went to volcano brewing on the beach to watch the sunset to enjoy a great craft beer!
He drove us to Arenal pointing out wildlife, stopping when we needed, connecting our music and sharing the culture and history of CR.
On the hour and a half trip to Los Suenos he filled us in on Costa Rican culture, industry, tourism and ecology.

We then learnt the whole process of making chocolate and cocoa butter including the history of cacao, the economics of the trade and the benefits of this fermented food.
Bob was really interesting and talked us through the entire chocolate process stage by stage, performing each stage as he went along with a sample of cocoa beans.

The Farmer's Market runs every Saturday morning, with a variety of merchants - some offering handmade goods, others offering a variety of food, and some selling fresh fruits and vegetables.
They also had a large number of booths of prepared food including several vegan options.
Ths is a 5 minute walk (below main street level) from the Hotel Aranjuez in the Aranjuez neighborhood of San Jose.
