This is not and easy bike ride but worth the effort. On a clear day the views are amazing. Bring lots of water.

Fantastic hike - heck of a workout for sure! Sadly we didn't make it all the way up to Inspiration Point bc we got confused and didn't realize how much further up it is from this particular trail...and it's not mentioned in AllTrails info - it's listed as a separate hike!

All told - from our car and back and bc we explored extra bc we got a little lost - we hiked just over 6.5 miles, 1700+ elevation gain and did just over 22,400 steps - took us about 4 hours.

This particular trail is about 2 3/4 miles up one way (so 5.4 miles out and back) - you start at the trailhead at the old Cobb Estates area at the top of Lake Ave. It's a steady incline all the way up with lots of switchbacks and was manageable- I'd call this hike moderate to lower level advanced - definitely not a beginners hike. We gained 1700+ feet in elevation and the trail is very very narrow and can be very rocky in places with tall steps. We got there right around 8-810am on a weekday and it was pretty crowded - and also had some mountain bikers which makes for a very interesting situation passing each other on the narrow trails lol! But it makes for a fantastically exhilarating adventure!

You're treated with absolutely gorgeous views of the LA Basin and downtown and we were even able to see all the way out to Catalina island! There were a couple of small benches and one large one on the way. And at the top there are fascinating ruins of the Echo Mountain House (an old Victorian lodge) and the Mt Lowe Railway - there are hug cogs and wheels left and some tracks that go right off the mountain! There are also lots of information plaques telling of the interesting history. I loved it! I realized too late that we totally missed the echo phone in the upper part where some picnic tables are - but I'll be going back once I work up to being able to get to Inspiration Point.

Turns out, Inspiration Point is up another trail once you get to the ruins - and it's about another 2 miles up (4 miles total loop) - so if you do the whole hike, you're looking at just over 10 miles. We got just a tad lost trying to find it bc the signs aren't obvious- but if we had planned better it wouldn't have been an issue. Lesson learned - part of exploration and adventuring!!

Parking is all street parking at the end of Lake Ave and is a residential area. We didn't have any issues finding a spot. But be sure to read the parking signs for any restrictions since this is LA. There are no bathrooms or facilities so be prepared. Bring plenty of water! We needed our packs, snacks, water, hiking shoes and poles for this one!

Within these grounds lie the remains of the history of Altadena, a site of multiple filimings of movies and TV as it and its mausoleum can pass for many places. I contains above ground monuments, large trees and Mt. Wilson as a backdrop.
    Ghost tours every year.
Headstones tell the history of Altadena.

I took the single run shuttle yesterday and instead of taking one of my usual frontside routes (1h15m to JPL) I jumped out at Redbox and rode the Gabrielino Trail down through Switzer and onto JPL parking lot to my car (2.5-3hours). This route is easygoing from Redbox to Switzer with one tricky rock garden near Switzer, Switzer itself is fun but plenty of tree root, creek crossing and rock gardens to negotiate. The next stage is enjoyable but there is recent treefall that you may have to clear off the trail and a few washout sections to approach with caution. The section in the Arroyo Seco valley is very river sandy and pretty easy to lose the trail completely. The final section has creek crossings and some fun jumps. Look out for hikers and horses on the lower Gabrielino Trail. Took me, a rookie, about 2hrs 45mins (including 20 minutes losing/finding the lower Gab trail). Great fun, *MTB Project app recommended to aid navigation.

I have a mailbox here, and Lori or Scott always lets me know when a package has arrived. I also like the unique cards, gifts and Altadena centric artwork, but really motivated me to write this is I have finally found a good chamomile tea. Sleeping Beauty Herbal tea is a blend of chamomile flowers, rose, lavender and lemon and is truly a lovely brew.

This is so far one of my favorite waterfall hike. The trail is shaded and you will be surrounded with plants, streams and rocks all through out the hike. It's only less than 2 miles roundtrip. Keep in mind to wear water repellant hiking footwear. Make sure the sole of your shoes have a good grip as you step over wet rocks while crossing streams. An extra pair of footwear will come in handy after the hike. I just basicallly followed the stream into the canyon. The waterfall is clear and kids could wade and play underneath. There are two options for parking. One is on the street which is free but very limited as in for less than 10 vehicles. The hike from this spot is longer. The second parking is closer to the campgrounds and restroom. The campgrounds is where you will find the marker of the trail towards the waterfall. For this second option an CA Adventure Pass is required to park and can be purchased on line or George's Market in town. Make sure to call the market for the pass availability. They can easily run out during peak season. Try to come early during the weekends cause it tends to get crowded. This is an easy and fun hike even for small kids.

Owners have turned a rundown watering hole into a successful Tavern. Has pool and big screen and the usual libations. A bit rich for my taste but I had to check it out. Wheelchair accessible from the rear but not Fair Oaks. Enjoy
