What travelers are saying
- mariedesjardinsPrince George, Canada7,312 contributionsThe Vanderbilt estate on Rhode Island is reminiscent of great gatsby at the turn of the century. The furnishings, marble, and gold trimmed decor were breathtaking. The tiled balcony overlooking the ocean was truly impressive. There was a children’s playhouse outback by the gardens to tour as well if you desired. Regrettably it was raining that august day so I didn’t spend much time out back.Written September 15, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Kim H32 contributionsWent on a sparkling sunny day and the views are exceptional! Stunning mansions on one side and the ocean on the other side. Not a difficult walk at all - mostly flat - with some sections where you walk on uneven boulders. Totally enjoyed it!Written September 9, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Bernie OBondsville, MA553 contributionsSince 2015 we have done an annual bike ride on the Island We cover the island in a counter Clockwise route after we go to NE Lighthouse. We always stop at Mohegan Bluffs as it is the most beautiful view on the island. Some years we walked down the close to 100 steps to the beach.Written August 8, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - EdwelshNorth Canton, OH7,228 contributionsWe enjoyed the Newport Mansions tour by the Preservation Society of Newport County. Our guide was very good and informative. It’s just hard to imagine what life must have been like when wealthy people were living in these lavish historic homes. The Preservation Society saved 11 of these Historic Landmarks and now gives tours of them. We drove by The Breakers, Marble House, Rosecliff, plus more. Then we stopped and toured The Elms last, impressive. It was interesting with an almost overwhelming amount of facts and names. Who were these people and how did they amass these huge fortunes?Written September 16, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - EdwelshNorth Canton, OH7,228 contributionsThe tour of The Elms was included in our Newport Mansions tour. By the time we got here, as our last stop, we had an hour to rush through the mansion and gardens. It was not enough time, this “cottage” is huge and there are stories in every room. The Preservation Society of Newport County saved the building at the last minute before it was to be demolished and turned into a parking lot. The furnishings were auctioned off only to be donated back once the Preservation Society took it over. The rooms are large, the ceilings high, the staircase impressive with marble everywhere. Downstairs you will find the huge kitchens, I could imagine the staff members buzzing around like a beehive during a lavish dinner party. Don’t miss the gardens, out beyond the huge group of European Beech trees, it’s gorgeous.Written September 16, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - mariedesjardinsPrince George, Canada7,312 contributionsThe exterior with its grand marble columns leads into an elaborately decorated mansion. Marble house was furnished with turn of the century luxurious furnishings, canvases, and shiny marble floors. There is an Asian tea house out back, but it was a very rainy day in Newport so I skipped it. Also I had ferried over from providence so I didn’t know how long I’d need to explore each mansion. I toured the mansion in august.Written September 15, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

I can tell you that they have a nice gift shop with large restrooms. The grounds around are nice with a new dock and benches facing the waters. We had a nice view of our cruise ship and a nice view of it from the ship.Written September 16, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - jason l8 contributionsHello my experience going to the RISD museum with my family was amazing is because just seeing the art work in person is breath taking. The different artists who present their creative art work to the public to see is one of the best way to experience it. My favorite art work is the painting and when I see the painting I immediately explore the area and see the style of the painting. It is just one best way to see the art work and this is one of the best way to do it. I would definitely recommend people to visit this place.Written July 25, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - CelticGirlLALos Angeles, CA563 contributionsThis is really worth your time! Having been to almost all the other Mansions in Newport i was delighted to go here and discover this place. Incredible art work in the main downstairs rooms, wonderful garden and ocean views. Currently they have an elephant exhibit on the grounds which is stunning against the ocean. If you love antiques, getting a glimpse into their personal rooms and taste don't miss this Museum. Helpful and knowledgeable staff that can explain where the art is from and it's history to the house.Written August 23, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Ellen STexas15 contributionsGreat tour with perfect commentary. Guests may sit outside or inside. I had an entire section of the bow to myself: glorious. The commentator provided lots of history of the area as well as the history of the ten lighthouses. It could not have been better!Written August 19, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Voyage155342040883 contributionsWe went July 31. The water was cold but you get used to it. Perfect waves and a whole lot of fun. We're from Florida and have shells on our beach so it was fun to look for rocks. It costs $12 per person to go on the beach which is a bit steep but they do have clean bathrooms and showers available. They close at 6pm promptly so sorta defeats the purpose if you're staying later than that, which we did b/c it was summer. We went on a weekday and it was pretty crowded so if you're going on a weekend I would definitely recommend going before 10 am.Written August 5, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
