- Stephanie S2 contributionsDisturbing but necessary experience. Should be mandatory for all school classes and anyone who is willing to face our country’s history face on so that it does not repeat itself.Written December 21, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - VanDoLebanon, NJ467 contributionsMake sure you make time to visit Sloss Furnaces when in Birmingham. It was easy to follow the signs to do the self-guided tour. I liked the way you could get so close to the actual machinery. It was also interesting to read the signs and understand how the community was built around the furnaces.Written October 23, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - FarmerRKMoraga, CA627 contributionsMake sure you call ahead of time to make sure that they will be open. Hours of operation are Fri and Sat 10-4pm. We happened to be lucky to have Wanda Anderson as our guide. She was there to host a busload of tourists but at the last minute they canceled the tour. The tour starts with a 15 min movie followed by a tour of the two-bedroom house. Ms Anderson’s dad was one of two barbers of Dr. King’s. The house was refurbished to look like it did during the MLK years when he lived there with his family. Dr. King was 24 years old when he became the pastor of the Dexter Church. The docents are volunteers and you should confirm that they will be open when you plan to visit. We stopped at the Dexter
Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church several times and they were always closed. There is a small gift shop and the entry fee is $10. One hour is sufficient to visit this home. It is worth stopping here.Written November 4, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - AlvCDNorthern Virginia, VA60 contributionsI went with my husband, and 17, 13, 11, 10 and 6 year olds. Our guide, Jason, was friendly and full of wonderful facts. He was enthusiastic about answering our questions and always offered extra bits of information. There is meter parking all around so make sure you have some coins in your car - it shouldn’t cost more than a dollar. We were all offered a refreshingly cool water bottle, which was very thoughtful of the staff. I highly recommend touring this home!Written November 25, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- No sked35 contributionsFLW groupies know this is an amazing structure!
Tour is about 1 hr with time for questions. Our docent demonstrated passion for his duty and was a former student of the owner.
Don’t leave Florence without visiting the nearby Indian mound and museum.
I can see why the indigenous people thrived in this area! Too bad the land was stolen and they were killed for progress.Written January 5, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - BakerBlakely, GA547 contributionsOne of the iconic spots in America in regards to our continual struggle with human rights in this country. If you are ever in the area, you should definitely stop and walk the bridge, read the signage, and reflect on our history. It is an awe-inspiring experience, as well as a reminder that there is still much to be done. A solemn reminder of how bad history in the South was.Written December 19, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - KK78Bay Shore, NY890 contributionsAmerica's oldest baseball park, where Willie Mays started his professional career. Unfortunately, the inside was closed and there were no games scheduled the weekend I was visiting, but I did walk around and peek in.Written October 16, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - worktotravel14Trenton, NJ3,984 contributionsWhile I did not make my way inside, I was grateful to have paid homage to Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, which is a place that marks Martin Luther King, Jr.'s beginnings as a preacher in the South. The little church is an imposing force literal steps from the capitol building -- and standing as a symbol of justice in the face of a place that still glorifies the confederacy.Written September 9, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - abroadwithashleyMinneapolis, MN1,742 contributionsAbsolutely fantastic museum. Especially for how compact it is - 45 minutes will get you through the totality of it, but still of the highest quality. The museum is mostly videos - one of which highlights the work of the Southern Poverty Law Center. But for $5, it’s an amazing bargain. A must go in Montgomery.Written June 12, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Joni PAtlanta, GA261 contributionsScott and Zelda lived in this beautiful house for about a year. The guide, Elena, informed us that the house in Montgomery where Zelda grew up had been torn down to make way for the interstate.
The downstairs of the house is packed full of Fitzgerald memorabilia. Elena was amazingly well informed and answered our many questions about the couple.Written May 30, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Sue Fairchild61 contributionsThere is a lot of cool historical things on display here, but it's pretty basic. Kids and history lovers will like it for sure. Since it's a recreation (not their fault, obviously) it would have been cooler had it been the actual location, etc. But still a cool place. Check out the Mardi Gras park right next to it and inexpensive parking lot too.Written September 21, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
