Divine island, the ferry over from Tavira is affordable, efficient and comfortable with great views en route. the beaches and unspoilt, there are some resort style where you can hire a lounger for E5 for the day and there are numerous places to eat and drink. We enjoyed paddling in the water, even in November and seeing all the different birds.

Park FOC on the road, walk across the access bridge to either take a bumpy/slow train (4€ return) or a 900m walk to the old Tuna Fishing station now a collection of tat shops, snack bars and an overpriced restaurant.

Head up to Cimeterio de Ancora ( the star of the show for me, but sadly sidelined) and there in front is a vast expanse of fine sand and thumping waves. Good for a stroll, a coffee and then back to mainland…

A lovely beach only accessible by boat! Not sure how much a general boat crossing is as we were staying at the nearby Pedras da Rainha and they offered complimentary crossings. Well worth a visit - we didn't sit on the beach but is was beautiful for walking along and taking in the wonderful panorama. For those wanting to sunbathe, there are sunbeds available.

Cool Medieval castle overlooking the small town of Tavira. The origins of the castle are not entirely known, as it has been built and destroyed or damaged, and rebuilt many times. The castle is an easy 5-10 minute walk up the hill from the town center and includes lots of beautiful trees and flowering plants inside the walls. No fee to enter the castle and look around.

From the outside this church looks plain ad simple, but step inside and prepare to be wowed. The walls are covered with blue and white azulejo tiles showing acts of charity carried out by the nuns whose convent church this used to be. The tiles are well maintained and beautiful. The organ loft and altar piece is another work of art. Well worth a visit and especially for a fado concert.

Enjoyed the potted history of Tavira and the unusual view of the town through the lens. Presenter very knowledgable and entertaining but spoke very quickly and it was over in a flash! Well worth a visit though, particularly at the beginning of your trip.

Also known as the "Roman Bridge," the span dates back the 1600s, although parts of it have been rebuilt after floods. The bridge crosses the Gilao River and is only used as a pedestrian bridge in current times.

A short ferry ride to Costa Beach is well worth your while when you're staying in Tavira.
Costa beach is on Tavira Island. It's clean with crystal clear waters, located within the Natural Park of the Ria Formosa.
You can rent loungers and cost is based on the proximity of the lounger to the water. Even the furthest lounger from the water isn't bad. All are close enough. Very reasonable cost for a day use.
The beach is safe and clean, water is relatively calm, and the beach stretches as far as your eyes can see.
There are numerous restaurants available. Leaving your belongings unattended while you get something to eat was not a problem. They also had Thai massages available.
    Love this beach!

This beach is absolutely fantastic! It has plenty of restaurants nearby, and has a small bar/ shop where you can also hire sunloungers. These were very reasonable for a cabana style set up, with 2 loungers, 1 chair and a table. It’s very easy to get there using the ferry from Tavira, which is also a bargain! We were unsure about going, but so glad we did. The beach is pristine and the sea is so clear!

To be fair I havent actually been here but I feel that we were all over the area around it trying to find it. It proved beyond our navigational skills I'm afraid despite several conflicting signs. So beware.
