One of the biggest attractions of this city. It is a large fortress that partly remembers the Napoleonic times but was only completed after these wars. In the museum you can find a story that it was defended very bravely, with less troops than the enemy had. They say you can walk all the walls, that's not true and definitely don't take your kids on this trip. There are only safe parts. There it is easy with the children too. There are several cultural institutions there, but generally it is also an interesting place for the inhabitants to live. Part of the fortress is inhabited like a housing estate. It is worth going there on a clear day. The fortress is quite extensive so it will be a lot of walking.

Admission only one euro. For these one Euro, you can easily see interesting animals, especially with children, because there are a lot of them. It is a rather large pavilion than a full size zoo but fun. Some cages are open so you have to be careful especially with children. The smell is also specific and inevitable in the zoo. I generally recommend it.

Beside from being the host of the "Mark Rothko Art Center", the Daugavpils fortress has its own charm.

Like many fortresses, it has nice ramparts you can walk on, a long bridge over a dried moat and some abandoned buildings.

Unlike any fortresses, though, it also is host to 5-stories soviet-style apartment buildings... quite surprising.

What made this place more interesting for me was to explore the area and get into some of the (many) abandoned buildings. Some are very richly designed and uncovered from the plaster that covered the red brick. Very nice.

Spent about 1 hour wandering around... for free !

The city is not big. Each attraction is worth attention. Indeed, the church itself is beautiful. Renovation is currently underway. They say it can accommodate 5,000 people. I have the impression that standing and cramped. The church is situated on the so-called hill of the 3rd religions. Easy to get to by tram.

A very nice park with a large fountain. Concerts are held here at the fountain. Many people lie down or take a rest on hot days, especially with splashing water. I was able to hear a concert there. People were happy.

I thought I was going to get an audioguide when I booked a timeslot to visit this museum (timeslot booking required... thanks to COVID).
Upon arrival and paying, I was offered a guided tour instead. Sure, it was 7,50 EUR more... but it was so worth it.

The guide was very good at explaining each panel station, giving detailed information and making it interactive, too.

It is important to note that there are no explanation panels on the items on display... so the audioguide is a minimum.

Our tour lasted about 1 hour and we covered everything, including the tasting.

The guided tour is highly recommended.

It is sooner such an illustrative museum of history and tradition than an art gallery. Very nice service. The possibility of an electronic guide. Only 2.5 Euro. The best place to have a general view of the history of the city, region or country. There was even a cross of valor from a distant family connected with mine.

A very beautiful little Orthodox church. Downright miniature style. It is an example of Russian architectural thought. You can see that he is liked by the locals. Several times when I was sitting in the beautiful park next door, many people went there one by one.

As two travelling physicists, we like to visit science museums with hands-on experience. It is a reminder that science can be fun. After visiting quite some of these museums, it starts to get repetitive. "Zinoo" is quite small, you can see the whole room immediately. Luckily, there were not too many children at the time of our visit, so we were able to spend our time on the experiments as long as we want. The staff can speak English, but prefer Russian. And this is what was a bit troubling for me. I understand that the staff is very happy to see someone who actually listens to what they say, but for me it was a little bit too much of this attention. I don't speak Russian and my boyfriend didn't translate me anything, because almost nothing new was said, which I wouldn't know from my own experience and knowledge.
My suggestion would be to ask about the background of adult visitors. If their answer is somehow related to the topic of the attraction, let them explore on their own, but be there to answer any questions.

A very nice lady-girl named Karolina. Very attentive and knowledgeable. Give her a smile because sometimes I have the impression that she treats her duties too seriously, but that's good :) Nice atmosphere and lots of interesting papers to take. They will also help with the timetable of buses and trains.
