The largest synagogue in Europe is worth visiting, especially if you have not been into a synagogue previously. The Dohány Street Synagogue was consecrated in 1859, so it has seen a lot of history. It was in the Jewish ghetto during the Nazi/Arrow Cross period. The Hungarians seem to have helped the Jews, especially after the fall of communism, as, though the number of Jews killed in the Holocaust from Hungary was enormous, they have continued in the country, whereas in other countries they have almost disappeared.

When the ghetto was liberated, the bodies of thousands of Jews who had been frozen or starved to death, or died as a result of the siege and the brutality of the Arrow Cross, were found in the streets. More than two thousand of these were buried in the garden. Many could not be identified. Mass graves are not normal in Judaism, so one can only imagine the extreme circumstances that forced this solution to the care of the dead.

It was interesting to see a Heroes Temple, to the Hungarian Jews who died in WWI. There is also a museum on the site.

We spent much longer than we expected on the site. There is a great deal to see - and a great deal to contemplate (and we are not Jews ourselves).

An amazing cornucopia of delicious ness.
Fresh from the farm. I would personally recommend the meat 🥩
We bought Venison which my lovely wife cooked to perfection.
Sausages/ bacon jams and pickles an Asian lady gave me tips on how to make a fine chicken curry👍There was cider and ale and things to eat. Easy parking a short 🚶‍♀️ walk away.
A most enjoyable few hours rounded off with coffee and brandy in The Fleece. The Corn Hall had stalls selling things hand made and
    different. Check it out.

Great place - very different from day to the night ! Day has market stands and more and a relaxed atmosphere - night time depending on the evening is a bit chaotic ! But still excellent fun - good place - funky ! I say and had a sheepshead one night which lasted nearly an hour ! 😂😂

We recently stumbled upon the Trash Art Museum in Budapest, it's an absolute hidden gem! This unique museum showcases an incredible collection of life-sized sculptures and artwork made entirely from scrap metal and other discarded materials. It's a mind-blowing display of creativity and craftsmanship.

If you're looking for something a bit different in Budapest, I highly recommend visit!

Budapest's Jewish Quarter also known as District VII is an amazing blend of history and tradition and also provides for some of the most energetic nightlife that you will find in the city. You will find here the beautiful Doheny Street Synagogue built in the 1850s in a Moorish Revival style and it is the largest synagogue in Europe. However, this is also the neighborhood to find Budapest's famed "ruin pubs" that have been created from old, abandoned buildings. It's a hip scene with the perfect combination of grit and style. The first and most famous of the ruin pubs in SzimplaKert which is well worth experiencing. However, there are many other options including Mika Kert which is a laid-back beer garden creating a great ambience.

Tucked away in the rear courtyard of the Dohany Street Synagogue is a memorial that is known by many names including The Tree of Life, The Holocaust Memorial Tree, The Emanuel Tree, and The Memorial of the Hungarian Jewish Martyrs. The sculpture was created by Imre Varga in 1991.

The sculpture commemorates at least 400,000 Hungarian Jews murdered by the Nazis and their Hungarian collaborators during World War II.

The sculpture takes the form of a silver-colored metal weeping willow tree symbolic of mourning. The tree has thousands of small metallic leaves, some of which are engraved with the names of victims of the Holocaust that were once housed in the Budapest Ghetto.

Some suggest that the weeping willow tree form also represents an upturned menorah. In front of the tree stands a tall, black pillar with two spaces that form the image of the Tablets of the Covenant. It’s believed the pebbles placed around the base of the sculpture are left in memory of those who lost their lives!

We took the train from Budapesht to Sibiu which was a 9+ hour journey. We booked the morning train (they have an overnight train too) online from the official Hungarian rail website. We had booked the tickets about a month ahead. We had second class tickets and there was no air conditioning in the compartments. Each compartment had 6 seats and luckily we shared it with just one other person. You need to make sure that you sit in the right compartment as part of the train detached midway along the journey and goes to Clju, and the rest goes towards Sibiu/ Brasov.

The toilets on the train were bad. Some were in such a bad state that cleaning crew just locked the toilets at Budapesht. There is a boader security check before and after crossing into Romania. The train stops for a while on both stations (20 to 30 minutes on either side), so you get to use the restrooms at the transtations there. Suggest you use the restrooms once you cross over to the Romanian side as they are right across the platform.

I can't imagine how hot it would be inside the train without air conditioning if it was a sunny summer day. It was raining on the day that we travelled and we were fine without air conditioning. Make sure to take water and snacks/ lunch as we didn't see any places to buy food along the ride.

Once you arrive in Sibiu you can walk to the old city. It's an uphilll walk, may be about 10 minutes. There were taxis in at the train station also.

Taking the train was much cheaper than getting a private one way transfer (we were quoted 800 euro for 2 adults). Flying is the other option, and the cost is comparable to the train ticket cost, if you don't mind the transit (didn't find direct flights between the two cities).

I'm posting this here as I couldn't find recent reviews on Budapesht to Sibiu train ride on tripadvisor.

The place we stayed is Kiraly Street, It is a shopping street with lots of different stores. It is not like the pedestrian Fashion street at all and it is more for the locals. There are lots of small cafe and restaurants, grocery stores etc,

The further away you walk from the city centre, the more reasonable is the price of the restaurants and cafe.

The synagogue was beautiful and the guide very informative. The ghetto almost impossible to read the information as so many people all standing in front. This was January, later in the year must be a nightmare

We went in December, so this market felt full with lots of potential presents from many independent designers/sellers. A few stalls were similar, but lots of variety still :)
