Our 3rd time in Budapest, but 1st time at their Christmas markets. It was a lovely experience, whole city center gives you holiday vibes, everywhere smells amazing from their delicious food. We had some paprikas , goulash and lángos. All excellent, delicious . St Istvan Basilica was also beautiful to watch with the lights game displayed on it every 30 minutes. Overall a nice cosy Christmas atmosphere in Budapest, a lovely city with lots of touristic attractions. As a Romanian tourist i would like to thank our Hungarian neighbours for the hospitality. Kisses and love from Romania to Hungary . Merry Christmas !

    Not as good as Berlin
We were slightly underwhelmed by the Budapest Christmas markets. They are not particularly large and there is nothing specific to each one.
They do contain lovely little craft stalls and the usual food and drink (be careful some of the food and drink is VERY expensive- watch the langos sellers- they charge for every single thing they put on.. get one of these from a side street cafe instead…)

But unlike Berlin, there was no focus to each market. There was no entertainment, no skating rink (these are separate) and very little street decoration outside of the wooden cabins.

Budapest itself is so beautiful and that exceeded our expectations, so doing the Christmas markets alongside a city break is good.

They close at 9pm and as no entertainment etc. so we found they were much better in the day- more vibrant and more to see.

Wonderful way to learn about music and dance of the area. However, the enjoyment was visual only since the music and stories told was in Hungarian only. It seemed to be a very local event with few visitors.

Budapest did not feel like a very international city except in the wine festival where it felt a little bit different from the rest of the city. We had a 3 day travel pass so we took the public bus up to the castle and made our way to the festival. We had bought our tickets online so we just presented the online ticket and were given our wrist band. The festival is well organised, it is in a large area but well spread out with plenty of places to sit and enjoy your drink. There were many wines to try and we focused on the local Hungarian wines. The Tokaji wines we tried were particularly good. (sweet white dessert wine) this wine is a speciality of Hungary. If you are in Budapest during the annual wine festival this event is definitely worth going to.

Awesome experience in all aspects! Joyful spirit, good food ( the smoked salmon was paradise and the cinnamon almonds soooo tasty and low calories choice) but what blew my mind was the projection show on the basilica church, the live music and generally the happy people that I made friends with! This was one of the best Christmas markets I’ve been!

I visited the recently opened villa during a private tour, given by one of the owners, a businesswoman, who told us about the extraordinary story of the villa, including the renovation, and the 40+ years of putting together the collection, of Zsolnay ceramics, with an emphasis on the early, Beaux Art style period. It’s a pity it is not open permanently. Maybe later.
Though the building was used by a communist time printing house for decades (first as a kindergarten, later as offices), many details were miracoulously preserved. Then renovated with exemplary care.
I’ll certainly include it in the next edition of my Budapest: A Critical Guide.

Marczibányi Square's Culture Centre (Marczibányi Téri Művelődési Központ) is located in the 2nd district close to Millenaris or Mammut Shopping Mall.
The Marczibányi Square's Cultural Centre was opened in 1972.
It serves the cultural and entertainment needs of people living in Budapest.
It has since become a legend, thanks to the countless cultural, often innovative, progressive programs that now reach out not only to young people but to all ages, offering them a meaningful way to spend their time.
