Have read over here numerous reviews before traveling to Budapest about how bad the public transport is and metro scams over there happening all the time,so have to leave a review. Now after returning from my trip I got to say I had a complete different impression. We used metro extensively during our 2days in Budapest and had no problems at all.You have 2 options for tickets you either buy tickets that needs to be validated for single use or you can buy 24 or 72h pass which needs no validation and I find it to be good value for money. We bought tickets \24hours pass from vending machines ,everything is quite easily organized machines are on visible places and I find their metro system to be quite effective and well organized for getting to all the sights in the city. There are validation machines put before you enter the metro stations so on top of the stairs or before the area where stairs start to metro,if you have single use tickets validate it before you go further,so they are quite visible just be sure which ticket you are buying. We had during 2days 2checks of our cards and had no problems at all with controllers.

A cheap way to get up and down the river as some of the ferry lines are included in the all inclusive public transport tickets (weekdays only). The ferries offer great views from the river and have a little cafe onboard and (terribly smelly) free public toilets. The lower deck is completely closed in and the upper deck is open with some covered areas. The ferry stops are generally easily accessed from the tram and metro lines.

Stopped at the ticket booth at Budapest airport & explained where we needed to get to. We were sold 2 single tickets for each part of the journey when what we really needed was a transfer ticket. Although these tickets were valid, it worked out an expensive way to get from the airport to city centre. Staff were helpful but very busy.
