- Dominik KiezikWarsaw, Poland5,363 contributionsThe market has changed very positively. It used to be quite dusty and gray. Now it looks really nice and reflects the atmosphere of the city. I was surprised. There's still some renovation to do, but it's really good. Bydgoszcz is changing its opinion in my eyes.Written January 13, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- martin aWare, UK21 contributionsBydgoszcz it's a great city to visit. I much preferred it to Gdansk and Torun, although they are quite an easy journey from here. Bydgoszcz feels like a real living place, whereas the other two cities felt like film sets and tourist haunts. It's a lovely place to walk around and the setting with the river running through it is beautiful. It's got a great set of restaurants for lunch or evening meals, and it's very lively in the evenings. It's a place where lots of people seem to have fun. The architecture is lovely too, and it's all very walkable. I'd happily come back whereas I'll never go to Gdansk or Torun again. I came in early September when it was very warm. I have no idea what it would be like in colder weather. I got a place to stay right in the centre, and it was a great location. The centre of the old town is about a mile from the main station, but it's an interesting walk.Written September 4, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - pawel_hbgSopot, Poland16,815 contributionsMain Post Office is one of the most spectacular buildings located on the Brda river bank and definetely one of most beautiful post offices I have ever seen. It was built at the end of the 19th century in the Prussian national style. Until today the building is occupied by the post office, what is interesting- open 24-hours.Written May 16, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Paul LegateUnited Kingdom21,879 contributionsThe mBank Building is a modern structure and is on the Brda riverbank in central Bydgoszcz. Whilst it may not be a must see it definitely has its place. It has been designed extremely well to coexist with the other buildings along Brda River including the Old Granaries other surrounding traditional architectural styles. The building is worth seeing whilst in the Old Town/Brda River area of the city.Written November 9, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - podrozniczka60New Jersey16,871 contributionsMost of the 15th century medieval Bydgoszcz city wall was demolished in 19th century but you can still see fragments on the outskirts of the Old City. Several nice stretches are still well preserved as well as small fragments of tower. The best is to go on a walk around the parameter of the Old Town. Go along Pod Blankami street and near the numbers 4-6 you will see some old fragments. There are also part of the city wall later incorporated into some buildings. Near Nowy Rynek 3 and Pob Blankami 4 there is a cylindrical tower with two entrances. Near Pod Blankami 8-10 you can see a 100 feet stretch of wall. There is a museum building there where one can see from above the old city wall fragments uncovered in 1990s during archaeological research in this part of the city. We did not go in there but I heard it was highly recommended. Another great area is 130 feet long Pod Blankami 22-28. In many areas one can also see what is left from the old moat. Looking for the Bydgoszcz city walls can truly be like an adventure with lots of fun. You train your eye to look for architectural details sometimes in plain sight but sometimes hidden.Written January 30, 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - endrju_74Ipswich, UK4,837 contributionsBydgoszcz was a bit unlucky with its most important building, as town hall definitely is. The proper built one appeared in sort of early 16th century right in the middle of market square, replacing a wooden one, which caught fire. The new bricked town hall, with tall tower, was in use till 1708, when it burned down. Unsafe ruins stood there for another century, till it finally got dismantled. Remains were discovered in 2010, and further discoveries were made in 2016. Now it is planned to cover those remains with glass, for everyone to see. But since the old town hall gone, local council used a number of different locations to perform their duties, till 1879, when they bought a former Jesuit collegium, which by that time was just a regular German gimnasium. So since the end of 19th century the new town hall was a hidden from market, behind west side of market, behind the church. That changed in early months of WWII, when German invaders decided to knock down the whole west side of the market, including a Jesuit church. That way the town hall is now visible from the market, being its western side. Part of the market adjacent to the town hall is often used for patriotic events. Important as it is for town citizens presents no value for tourists, appart from its eastern facade, which is pretty much in every photo taken on the market. But it cannot be visited for tourists purposes, which isn't a big shame, as after so many reconstructions over the years it's former baroque style has been lost somehow.Written April 22, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
